DCT transmission fluid and filter change

I thought that it might be prudent to change the side filter and fluid in my DCT in preparation for the upcoming track season.

As far as i can tell, no maintenance is required until about 40,000 miles.

That just blows my mind. Im attaching a copy of the owners supplement if anyone wants to peruse it. Common sense says that you would at least replace the side fine filter after a few track days to get the break in materials, but no, the manual says nothing of it.

The fine filter kit runs about $120, which lends support to the notion that it is not a regular service item.

I believe I read that the chairman has replaced his fine filter, but i can't see where that is maintenence as specified as per the regular scheduled maintenance as set forth by the owners supplement.

I agree, but the basis of my question is that it doesn't seem right that if you are tracking your car, you replace a filter at 20,000 miles. I don't know. When you are out on that track, the transmission is running high revolutions and working its ass off.

I went ahead and bought a filter. If anyone cares, the part number is KR3Z-7C045-B. It was $110 at Tasca parts.

I take it there's no severe service chart. You'd think Ford would consider this....

Agreed on the standard service interval if tracking. 20K seems like a lot in that scenario.

I was just getting ready to purchase a filter. Thanks for the heads up.

They haven't returned my emails in 3 weeks. Their website logs every email you send to them and it shows up under your order number. They have ignored everything. Another GT500 owner started a thread about them on the other 500 forum as well so I'm not just the one unlucky customer.

My order was placed September 5th.

I just changed my side filter again after another year of track time. As the first time, the filter looked clear. These things must run very clean!
I only removed the one hard line that goes to the filter housing this time vice both hard lines as shown in the instructions. Removing that one allowed enough room remove the filter housing.
This time, it only took 1/2 quart to refill. I’m sure this is because only one hardline and the housing were drained.

I bought the filter from Rock Auto (FT228) But I see the box was shipped from FCSD National Pars in Livonia, MI. Probbaly the central Ford Parts warehouse.

I do have an issue to report this time that I didn’t catch last year, and I’ll make another post shortly when I have the pix to show what happened.

After I removed the filter, I noticed it was visibly crushed:

For those that haven’t held one of these, they are VERY hard plastic. So the fact that it came out this way (and last year’s did not) had me puzzled. It’s impossible to install incorrectly, so I presumed something was blocking it. Here’s the pix of inside the transmission where the filter sits:

What the hell is that little black thing? Did that come from inside the DCT? Couldn’t have, as the fluid flows to the inside of the filter and something like this debris would have been pushed into the DCT, except the flow ports are too small to allow that. So, what is it and where did it come from?

I grabbed my needle nosed pliers and fished it out:

You can see it was deformed by the filter itself and caused the filter to be crushed a bit.

It’s one of those wedge-shaped seals used on the hard-line to the filter housing! The person installing the DCT must have lost one mounting the line to the filter and didn’t look to where it went.

This event couldn’t have hurt anything as the fluid flows from the cooler into the center of the filter, which is o-ring sealed to the housing. So no harm-no foul. But it was certainly puzzling when I first saw pix #2.
I would presume this is a rare install issue. But grab your cell phone (or a bore scope, which is what I did first) and look inside the DCT where you removed the filter & housing to make sure there isn’t any debris left over.

The fluid is actually Pentosin FFL 4. This is stamped on the side of the transmission:

Might be easier to find than the Ford fluid. But I haven’t tried.

Ford XT-11-QDC, the 2020-21 GT500 uses XT-14. I don't know what the difference is between them.
