IMO, the media hype IS causing panic.

But this is no flu, it is a novel virus. Huge difference.

get back us when it's getting anywhere close to killing 400 per day, ok? That's the LOWer bound of how many who have been dying since October from the simple flu. Till then it doesn't matter.

In WW2 about 290 americans died every day (when averaged).

The way people are acting is just pathetic and more so, utterly ignorant and clueless.
Old people die. Lots of them.

The USA 2018 flu season was an epidemic and no one panicked and bought all of the damn toilet paper.

61,000+ people died. This coronavirus is nothing.

Look how many worldwide

The flu is harmless compared to this thing.
I think the 51,000 dead 65+ year olds would have a different take on "harmless".

Italy has a SHIT medical system and a SHIT gov't who mindlessly felate Chinese communists, and imported a butt load of Chicoms to take over their domestic textile industry. It might as well be called West China. Hell, they only recently stopped the DIRECT flights between themselves and Wuhan. You want to talk moronic to the 10th power, it's the Italian government. And they have a butt load of middle-eastern invaders as well. Both groups do not practice 'white-man sanitation'.

Spain is targeted to be even worse than Italy but I haven't seen a write up on their social pathologies yet.

Everything is a trade off. Sure, you can try to lock American society down (the Chinese scoff at what passes for American 'lock down') but you bring about a depression. Ease up at any point in the "social distancing" and blam, you're right back to spreading like wildfire. Are we really going to collectively "hold our breath" for 6 months if not more like 18 hoping to stem the tide?

If indeed 2-4% (as opposed to 0.9% from flu) of folks over the age of 65 end up dead because of this, do we get to nuke China?

If you're older than 65 than sure, avoid people at all costs. And hope to god the 0-60 crowd get infected as much and as fast as possible so that the person bringing you care or food is not also bringing the disease with them to hasten your demise. For everyone else, Keep Calm and Carry On.

Italy because people can't afford their own houses, so gramps lives with the twenty-somethings who go out clubbing every night. Also, Italians live a long time, so there are quite a few older people in Italy.

I think the media has blown the whole thing WAY out of proportion. Look at toilet paper availability for an example.

I know a couple of RNs, and neither are bailing out of their jobs anytime soon but have concerns. One of them had this to offer:

"There are a LOT of people out there who have been exposed that haven't shown symptoms yet. They're already contagious but don't know it. Mostly the elderly and those with underlying illnesses are the ones we will lose. They won't have the strength to fight it off and recover since it isn't the run of the mill flu by a long shot as it is a novel virus that we have no immunity to. And I think it could recur when we think it's gone because it's an odd one that can change rapidly. I don't believe that we have a clue what we could be in for quite yet, all we can do is take all precautions."

It might be the worst thing humanity has dealt with so far as illness, might not. It has potential.
Time will tell, but my belief is that it's completely over blown. I think millions and millions of people already have/had it and got over it and now they are immune. Most never realized they had it because the symptoms were mild.

What you wrote sounds heartless, but I agree that old people DO die. All of them do. Eventually. There's no need to hurry up the process though. I think this illness isn't that different from the flu other than it transmits a little better and it takes a little longer to get over. But those two differences are only minor for healthy people.

You are misinformed.

The flu is harmless compared to this thing.

Italy's death toll surpasses China's with a total of 3,405 deaths (as per Italian press conference just now).

China, as of this time, has 3,257 deaths.
But isn't 61,000 people dead a lot bigger number than now a t

As it stands now, over 10,000 people have died since last year in November when it was first discovered and covered up by China(Of course now they blame us). I am not sure how I am misinformed comparing 60,000 deaths to 10,000 deaths and you say the flu is harmless. Mmmmmm

Wait and see folks its too early to tell just yet. Not trying to be a Richard, but I'm gonna guess most of us are at least a few credits short of a doctorate in infectious diseases. The same people that blame the media will use social media or forums like this to express misinformation and opinions that can be harmful. Trust in facts and science, not people.

Australia has a cure using HIV drugs and India is using HIV drugs, so is Canada and others. This thing will be over soon. Japan has a cure that China is testing and they all get better.

A cure? No. A therapy to alleviate the symptoms is more accurate. Chloroquine is the US focus now, it's a malaria drug that has positive side effects in the treatment of the effects of the coronavirus. Not a cure, more of a therapy.
