I know switching it back to Drive will cause bad damage so please don’t roast me.

But, if you were to allow revs to go completely back to idle on N whilst cruising before switching it back to D (smoothly with no kind of pull whatsoever). Would that hurt the transmission too?

Sometimes that tunnel viagra is tempting…

The bigger question is what is the reason for wanting to do it?

Everyone knows what a Mustang sounds like at WOT idle... 😂

no. there a clutch pack in the trans and it'll just slip if the forces are too high.
thank you, so then equally if it was to still be revved no damage when switching it in back to gear correct (if it pulled)?

I wouldn't say "no damage" (didn't we just have this discussion in 6MT guize?) because it will shock the driveline. Are you incapable of getting out of the throttle for the 1/2 second or so for the revs to drop before re-selecting 'D'?

If say you're rolling along at 40mph and the A10 is sitting in 10th gear and 2000 RPM, you do your empty rev thing and smack it back into D with 6000 RPM on the clock instead of 2000 you won't be doing the mechanical bits any favors, no.

Don't be a numpty. Just wait for the engine speed to come back down to match road speed before "Engage".

Sure, was just asking for general knowledge since you said it would slip to compensate any forces.

Thanks for everything!

Should have bought a manual If you wanted to do that.

Try dropping it down a gear or 5 and doing a high rpm blast.

Sounds much better under load.

or hit reverse….
That's what I was going to say. If for some reason you were inclined to disconnect the wheels from the engine while driving, make sure your foot is nowhere near the brake pedal. It would not be good accidentally going past neutral.

the auto box will do nothing bad if you select reverse at any forward speed. f it even lets you do that (various mechanical lockouts might be in place) i doubt it's engineered to grab reverse and fire you through the windscreen. Folks have tried it, nothing happened. I still wouldn't recommend it on your own car though!

Since it's just an electronic selector, I believe the software won't actually do it if you did throw it in Reverse.
There was a video posted where someone did it in an F-150. It didn't actually hit reverse until the vehicle was almost fully stopped IIRC. Park on the other hand.....
Would I ever do that or test that theory? Uh, no.
