I had the $5 deposit on my car and read the thread "dealer took my R away" and got nervous so paid for entire car before acceptance. So a few weeks on a train plus 5 weeks sorting out a suspension glitch. I had title and plates before the car!
I guess that could happen, but that story wound up being debunked. Apparently the guy used that story to solicit a lead on an R from a fellow member. MSRP if I recall correctly. The OP turned around and put it on ebay immediately to turn a profit. It was discovered by another forum member that the person in question has used this scam in the past.

Anyway, the idea of a REPUTABLE dealer going back on their word after taking a deposit is unlikely. However, there have been stories of dealers taking deposits for allocations that they don't have. This is the part that would concern me. I would get confirmation that the car is allocated by Ford from the regional rep.

I think it depends on your money situation. If there is a chance that you won't be able to afford the R when the time comes, then you shouldn't put down a non-refundable deposit.

If you could lose your job tomorrow and still buy the car in 10 months or whatever, then don't worry too much about it being non-refundable.

I do agree with having at a minimum something in writing saying what is expected of each party in the agreement, rather than you trusting that the dealer will keep their word.

I didn't buy an R but my story is probably applicable. My dealer wanted a $2k deposit. He said he'd hesitate to call it refundable, but that state law and dealer policy required them to give it back if I asked. He said it was more of a "put your money where your mouth is" situation. In other words, what was done with a handshake in old times, was now done with some money on the table. In the end, all went well and was delighted with the outcome. To this day, I'm still grinning.

Certainly agree with all of the above based on my experience when the original Boss 302's came out in early 2011.

At one point I had deposits at 3 different dealerships for a 2012 Laguna Seca with all dealerships telling me that they had allocations for an LS when they did not. Eventually I got all of my deposits back but certainly wasted a lot of time on dealerships that did not have any allocations.

If the dealership in question has an allocation and the deal is consummated all he needs is a copy of the VOC which confirms a car in his name along with the build priority code and how the car was ordered.

Certainly getting a receipt for a $5000.00 deposit should not be an issue.

Just my opinion but if the 2018MY will be the last year for the GT350 and in particular the R model I would suggest that ADM's will not go away for the last MY but I hope that I am wrong for many potential new buyers.

i put at 2500 down on one R and 5,000 down on another. The 5,000 one I cancelled. They can't keep your money, so I wasnt stressed.
