I remember your build on the ST Page. I remember the trans fiasco very well, I went through my own problems in a trans related fiasco on that car too.

Didn’t you also pop an engine on the ST? I know a lot of people do. Just remember the gen 3 Coyote isn’t a $600 replacement like the ST was.

Hey nice car! That transmission was a nightmare, there was very little info around on doing an LSD back then. I was flying 100% blind for a lot of it, had a guide to go off of but it wasn't perfect. If I knew then what I know now, I could have done it in a weekend lmao. I think a lot of us suffered to discover the most optimal way of building that transmission. What happened to yours?

And nope, thankfully I never blew my motor, was really strong all the way to the end. I was always wicked paranoid about it, but it never happened. The 2.0EB was definitely a good motor, but it had it's issues, weak ring lands, badly designed evap system, cold start misfires just to name a few. I never felt confident in it, always kind of had a feeling that it was right about to let go at any moment. I'm less concerned about blowing this car, it seems that the ceiling is much higher on this engine and I'm not going to be anywhere close to it for a long while.

Eventually when I do a supercharger I'll have to be more careful, but for what I'm doing right now, we're not even going to exceed the factory limits. Just give the car what it needs to run at them more often :)

Very little info? I was just a phone call away, what more could you need?

Im happy to be out of Ecoboosts.

I don’t think I even really knew you back then! It was a different time, a dark time.

And yeah me too, the coyote is way nicer.

Though a 3.5EB definitely sounds fun…

Mine started off as a 2-3 synchro issue. It would randomly pop out of 3rd under load occasionally too. It did it from day one. I let the dealer look at it first, couldn’t replicate the problem amazingly. My dash cam showed they never even drove the car. Took it upon myself to go through the trans, found 3rd gear had a very shallow tooth engagement and the synchro had some wear. Replaced both and shimmed it to have a good tooth mesh. I’d rebuilt a few older manual transmissions, figured this would be the same, right? Wrong. Adjusting the shims for 3rd gear threw off 5th and to a lesser degree 1st. I threw in the towel and had someone else locally look at it. He said he removed a shim and everything else looked good. I swapped in a m factory lsd at the same time.

I miss that car sometimes. Mine was just a FBO car on 93 that Brian tuned. No idea what it was putting down, didn’t care. It was fun, quick enough that you could go there ouch the gears on the street and have fun without getting to jail speeds immediately. Lol

Damn right from the start? That's awful, Getrag just hasn't been with it forever, the MT84 and the MMT6 were both issue prone. I'm sorry you had a bad time with it, though it sounds like you did eventually get is solved which is good. The LSD was a great upgrade for that car too, totally changed the dynamics and handling. I loved mine.

I miss it too, it was cheap, you never had to worry about it because nothing on it was that expensive to fix. You could just whip it around without worrying about flying off a curve or going to jail for speed lmao. Though the downside is that it was tough to find people who knew how to take care of it. Before I did the transmission work myself (and subsequently sent it to Clarke) I looked really hard for someone to do it for me, eventually gave up on that idea.

I am glad to be out of it at the same time. I bought a Race Red 2014 in 2014. Did an inter cooler and tune. Drove for 2 years never had a problem. Joined the Atlanta ST club back when it was a active club. Had fun with those guys and then found a Jeep. Like an idiot traded the ST for a Jeep, that was a lemon and went back just in time to get the yellow ST in 2018. My red car was a different car, it had no rattles, was quiet driving down the road, just overall felt more solid. No idea why, both were ST1’s. The 18 was a great car too, facelift looked better, the wheels set it off I think.

If I could go back and somehow combine the looks of the 18 with the solid feel of the 14 it would be a perfect ST. Lol

You're not the first person I've heard say that the earlier generation cars were nicer than the later ones. My '18 always rattled and squeaked, I think they just gave up when they knew the model was done. I only had one trunk light, they didn't even try to hide it they just left a hole in the plastic. I only had one horn too, I believe the 18 ST3 didn't get the RGB lighting either. Just cut a lot of corners all around.
Sad, because I agree that the facelift was nicer looking.

I've had this idea about getting a fiesta ST as a beater. Those seem fun, but I want to have something other than a ford lol.

Methanol line and solenoid installation

a few notes
  • The solenoid is mounted behind the driver's side front fender liner to pair of unused holes on the body. Its secured in the big open area under the headlight, so it will be shielded from direct water/salt spray.
    • Initially I was going to run it on the passenger side but the driver side ended up making more sense.
    • This will require me to extend the control lines from the passenger side over the motor to reach the solenoid but that's manageable.
  • The methanol line is run next to the fuel lines, there is an extra hole in the plastic hangers that was a perfect spot to run the line.
  • The line hasn't been routed inside the car into the trunk yet, I'm waiting on a handful of extra parts for that, namely, a -4AN bulkhead.
  • I used a combination of sticky zip tie squares and zip tie Christmas trees to hold the line. We will see how it holds.

I stole this diagram from a 2018 promotional photo, its kind of hard to visualize where the lines are unless you've already spent time under this car. So this photo makes it more clear.

Also in case it isn't clear, the lines run over the suspension components in each wheel well lol.

Here is the solenoid mounting:

Here's a handful of pictures of how the line is run, I don't have one showing it in the hangers but this should give you a good idea:

This is where it pops out at the back:

And then no pics of the rear wheel routing unfortunately, but I'll be back in there again to install the bulkhead so I'll get photos then :handsinair:

The routing is pretty clean overall, I can't stand badly routed wires and hoses (as is probably already obvious) so I wanted this to be really well secured and out of direct view. I think I achieved that well.

Then on the same day more parts arrived!

An fittings are not cheap, but they are very nice to work with and very easy to service.

CAN logging is beginning immediately, hopefully the guys at Syvecs can use this to get the 2 way communication going to the ECM.

NOTE for anyone planning on using this standalone:

Syvecs calls out the connector wrong in their description, manual, and literature.

Wrong connector: 2-1437285-3 (34 position)
Correct connector: 1473416-1 (26 position)

The picture in the manual shows a 26 position connector, however the part number they give you is a 34 pin connector, the product description says "34 pin connector". This is wrong its the 26 pin connector.

However, the silver lining is that they give you a connector in the box, so you won't need to worry about buying it at all.
