Does someone know what Ceratec is actually doing to make the tick go away ?
It's basically a ton of molybdenum and boron, oils with high amounts of those are known to run quieter

Thanks !
So it fills up the microscopic spaces between piston and cylinder. Will it be just more quiet or could it more "tighten" and have long term repercussion ?

I don't know if there was ever an official cause to the tick

and it seems to me that if ceratec filled microscopic holes in the metal it would stay there and you wouldn't need a new bottle when you changed the oil

I know on Toyota trucks the VVT cam phasers were making noises. My 2017 hyundai I jhad to replaced the VVT Cam phasers to fix the dreaded start up chatter problem. It's always something.q

So the infamous bbq tick is most often caused by piston slap, which happens when the piston inside the cylinder has excessive side-to-side movement, causing it to lightly hit the cylinder wall, creating a ticking sound, especially when the engine is cold and oil is not fully circulated.

CERATEC works by adding microscopic ceramic particles to engine oil which adhere to metal surfaces within the engine, creating a smooth protective layer that prevents direct metal-to-metal contact, thereby reducing friction and wear on engine components. Essentially, the ceramic particles fill in the tiny irregularities on the metal surfaces.
You are just echoing a popular internet myth that is 100% false.

Ok guys, we are going way off the rails here. There are TONS off BBQ tick and ceratec threads on this site going back several years.

Here's a quick recap for those that don't know -

Ford says it's normal, and issued a TSB to not to attempt service on engines making the "typewriter" or "BBQ" tick.

Pretty much all Coyotes do it. Though it is more prevalent in the Gen 3s. The people that say they don't have it, likely do and just never paid attention. Some cars are louder than others. One theory is that the composite oil pans dont insulate sound as well on the gen 3s compared to previous Coyotes, thus making it more noticeable.

There has never been an official cause found.

To my knowledge, there has never been an engine failure resulting from the BBQ tick.

Ceratec has been reported by many to eliminate or significantly quiet the tick. Ceratec makes your oil look milkey and freaks people out. You are technically not supposed to use oil attractives per the warranty, but I've yet to hear about anyone getting their warrant cancelled over it. Most dealers don't seem to care.

Lastly, if you really want to obsess over Coyote noise, search "2K rattle" and you'll really go down the rabbit hole. Enjoy. đź«

I'm curious, which one is the myth? The piston slap or how/if Ceratec works?

Piston slap is the internets answer for every Coyote noise.

Not just the internet apparently. When I took my car for the rear view camera recall, I asked around about the tick and the tech literally told me its piston slap although there's no "official" answer from Ford

I've been doing this for a while, piston slap is when their is excessive play between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall. if I thought I had excessive piston skirt play issues and knowing what the end result would be if not verified/fixed, I would stop driving and remove the Heads and do a Deck Height and Piston Rock check. if it is outside of movement specifications for piston to cylinder wall. I would disassemble my engine and replace my pistons, inspect the cylinder walls for excessive wear etc.
But that's just me. I think of the "What If's" Plus disassembling my engine would give me an excuse to heavily modify. LOL. Good Luck

I had 5w-20 full synthetic. That's what I was told.
They changed the spec to 5W30 as Ryan said, either late 2020 or sometime in 2021. Either way, changing from 5w20 to 5w30 isn’t going to cause any issues
Easiest way to find what weight oil is/was spec'ed for your engine is to read the oil filler cap. It's written right there in yellow...

Yeah but it change, I believe it was sometime in 2021. So some 2021 cars will have 5w20 caps and some will have 5w30 caps. Quite odd they changed it in the middle of a production year

Whether it changed of not, what's on the cap is what's specified for that engine. Assuming the cap hasn't been switched out that's what the manufacturer wants it to run.
But honest to goodness the whole question is a tempest in a teapot.
Unless you're boosting it or driving in some extreme conditions just get as close as you can.

I think the Mach E credits hit around then, so that's why.

IMO if your coyote isn't rattling and making annoying ass noises then it isn't making full power lmao
