Bought a 2020 GT350 from a local Ford dealer on Feb 17. On Saturday, the engine shut down, luckily in a Target parking lot. Car was transported to the dealer’s service department on the same day. Today, got the word that the engine has likely seized up and will need to be replaced. This at 206 miles on a car I paid 70K cash for! Does anybody know what would have happened if this had happened on a freeway?
I no longer trust this car! Service people were not surprised that this happened! Wow!

Oil starvation? As for what would have happened on the freeway, worst case scenario you were going around a corner and the rear tires would lock up. You'd maybe be fast enough to throw the car into neutral or press the clutch, but most likely it'd end with you hitting another car or the guardrail.

Best case scenario, you'd have skidded to a stop or you'd have enough momentum to keep the engine turning, thus the wheels spinning.

There was another GT350 horror story on this sight last week with the same engine failure. You can go the buy back route or get a replacement engine and demand an extended FORD warranty as other GT350 owners have gotten in writing. The word on the street is that these cars are time bombs so the warranty is your only protection. Resale of these cars is falling fast as the engine failure story is spread.

The REALLY sad part of all of this is we paid cash for everything, including an extended warranty that cost $6800.

I’m betting on the bad batch of valves that their supplier is sending them ! One bad apple spoils a whole barrel

Hit up the GT350 forum on here; I posted your link there for the other GT350 forum members to discuss and assist.

Something is definitely amiss at Ford... QC, inferior parts suppliers or supplied parts, or the “hand built” part of the process is failing somehow...

That’s a shame....

Do call the Ford 800# and reach out to get a Ford Regional CSR involved and get a Case number established....

and definitely check out this thread of a 2020 GT350R engine failure if you are on the fence with keeping the vehicle and having it repaired or going for a Ford Buy Back (lots of good info):

Thanks for the info. Went to the Denver dealership this morning and spoke to the Sales Manager. He seemed really concerned about everything. We had a good talk and I asked about the possibility of getting all of my money back after the new engine is installed. He said that scenario is definitely on the table, whatever that means. My $70K car was still sitting out in the open service lane, where it’s been since Saturday! I asked the Sales Manager if it could be moved inside somewhere and he said he would take care of it. So far, so good.

As far as keeping the car, I told the Sales Manager I could not believe our luck that the engine seized in a Target parking lot and he agreed. I’m not sure I’m fast enough to handle another seizure at speed. He also agreed with that. Somebody could have died. Bottom line is I do not trust the car anymore. If the engine failed at only 206 miles, what’s next?

I really thought a hand built engine would be a little better that a “standard” build. The Service people said that Ford will pull a replacement engine from the line of hand builts. I just can’t imagine the folks building those engines that don’t get past 200 miles!

So, the journey continues...

March 16

Went to the Ford Dealership again today to talk about the GT350. Our salesman said that the Service Manager said the failed engine was likely built by someone who didn’t know what they were doing. This seems incredible that this was probably the guy who signed the engine! They offered to make things right by selling us their allotted GT500 that is on its way for another $10K. We said no and they said they would start putting some numbers together for a refund.

More to come...

Engine Seizing seems to be as common as a ‘16 Tech Limp Mode. Just as dangerous in certain circumstances...

Sorry that happened to you @Brmiller49 .

Just curious, did you check the engine oil level before it presumptively seized?

Please keep us posted as developments happen.

I did not check the oil level. The pressure looked good and honestly, after only 200 miles I had not gotten a chance to do that kind of routine stuff I do monthly, like tire pressure and oil level.

I get it. New car and you just don’t think of catastrophic failure.

I’m going on my fifth season w mine and I’ve learned to check the oil every time before I take ‘er out for the day. Paranoia and all. I know full well it won’t stop something letting go but gives me a modicum of peace at least on start up.

Again, I’m sorry that happened to you. You really didn’t get a chance to experience all the car offers. I hope you’re treated well by Ford and your dealer.

Ford buys most of the components from first and second tier suppliers and the engine builders just do assembly. I doubt Ford x rays any of the components looking for cracks and voids not visible to the eyes, including valves. So yes it’s possible a supplier sent a bad batch of valves or other components to Ford. This should be traceable though but I doubt Ford let’s anyone know what happened, due to legal issues with their suppliers.
