Bad day for my new Mustang. I've had it for 2 months and put about 550 miles on it. Went to take it out yesterday to run an errand. Got about a block away from my house and was turning a corner at almost idle and the whole car shuddered and the engine died. I tried to restart it and it sounded like a tin can full of bolts being shaken, and died again. Next try, nothing.

Had it towed to my dealer today and just heard back from the Service Director. They drained the oil and found about a quart of coolant mixed in with it. And, "chunks of metal" came out while draining the crankcase. They are calling it a "catastrophic engine failure" at this point, and he suspects it will need a new motor. He said their next steps are to follow protocol with Hot Line and Prior Approval for how Ford wants them to proceed. Really hoping it will be a whole new motor as opposed to just a long block. I guess it will depend on what Ford says, but I suspect they will want the entire motor to determine what happened to it. Hopefully will know more soon, and I will post an update.

Sorry for your bad luck. hopefully they treat you right and you get a complete long block. seeing a few of these stories sure makes me rethink adding a Blower to my 18

Sorry for your loss, hopefully you get a nice new replacement motor.

Mine would've probably suffered the similar fate if i didnt check soon enough. I drove my brand new GT 995 miles with my oil level barely touching the tip of the dipstick the first time i checked my oil level. so that day, i brought it to my dealer to get my first oil change, just to discover a week later of driving (glad i checked before my long drive to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon this weekend) that they had once again just filled my crankcase with 7 quarts of oil (I had to add 3 qts myself).

the 2018 mustang gt requires 10 quarts of oil and my ford dealership service dept didn't know that! wtf?

I know so many people who have blown up engines while driving slow speeds.. you'd think they would fail while railing on them instead.

Do you know your build date or assembly month? Should be on the tag in the door jam. Sorry for the rotten luck and the journey ahead of you.

You can also get your build date if you go to the Ford ETIS website (http://www.etis.ford.com/home.do) and sign up. You’ll get a lot of info about your vehicle there too.

Looking at my window sticker, there is a line at the bottom underneath a line that has a description of “Item Number”. There’s a bunch of alpha numerics on it, ending with “11/1/17”. Not sure if that would be the build date or ship date, my guess is it was built somewhere around then.

Sorry for you!!!

Maybe that date is more like when it went in the production system.

Look at the driver door frame. There is at least top left of sticker the month and year of the manufacturing date.

Also toward the rear of the driver side valve cover there is the exact engine manufacturing date. However you need to remove the engine cover to see it.

Here is mine ! January 03 2018, Essex plant

My built date was suppose to be January 4. I can understand why it was only finish like the 8

UPDATE:

My service director just emailed and said that, as expected, long blocks are on back order. He authorized a complete motor replacement. He said they show one in Memphis so they placed they order. No ETA until they receive the packing slip info.

Did they say what caused it? did it drop a valve? seems like the early motors had valve retainer issues

They have not said yet. I’m just glad they are being proactive about ordering a new motor since they know this one is shot.

This is really unfortunate to her MrTej. In the last couple of weeks I have noticed a few posts from people having issues with their 2018 Gt engines blowing up and it is really concerning. WTH is Ford doing so wrong???

The new motors take time to "feel out", and I understand use 10 qts of oil, mercy?
Make sure all the oil changes you have are "monitored" by you! I just got Motorcraft Semi-syn change because the tech's forgot about my Castrol Magnatec, 8 qts in the trunk, Dang!
