So, I was washing and waxing my 2016 GT/PP earlier this week, and noticed that I have a rather large paint chip behind/under the passenger side hood heat extractor! It's below the "surface" of the hood, meaning that if something was to hit the hood, it would have no way of reaching this spot (it would pass over or hit the higher heat extractor). It's also on the trailing edge, away from the front end of the car. It looks like it extends underneath the plastic heat extractor, though I haven't removed it to see the extent of the damage.

My car is *just* a year old, and I'm pretty pissed that it could be poor prep or the hood cancer that S197s have. I'm in SC, and this car has never seen salt or snow.

Anyone else have a similar issue? What's the likelihood that I'd be able to get my hood repainted under the anti-corrosion warranty? Seems like paint should hold up for more than a year, especially when it's been waxed and taken care of.

What say you FordService?

Maybe the paint was damaged when the extractor was installed and it finally flaked off. Is that primer beneath it, or bare metal?

If it was mine I'd remove the extractor and use some Motorcraft touch-up paint, build it up back level with multiple layers, let it dry a day then buff it smooth to match. I've touched up chips like that were you can't even tell it was there unless you new before hand. Having the whole hood repainted for that isn't the way to go IMO.

If you don't have good touch-up skills, then have Ford pay to have a good body shop do the touch-up. A good body shop should easily be able to do touch-up like.

That sounds plausible. It's also possible that it was corrosion under the paint/primer. As the heat extractor is still mounted on the car, I can't tell if it is primer or bare metal underneath. I'm going to try to pull it this weekend, and see. Should be pretty easy, I just need the time to do it.

I have the Race Red touch-up paint, but screw that. There's ZERO way a rock or other road debris could cause this, because it's below the high point that's in front of it. The car is never parked under anything (other than my garage ceiling), so it's not like something could have been dropped on it to cause the damage.

Once I have more information, I'm going to call my dealership, who just freaking LOVES me. We'll see how long this takes.

Hello jacknifetoawan,

First, you should bring it in to your Ford Dealer and have them fully diagnose it. Then, let’s get this escalated and documented for you. Please PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number. You can schedule an appointment online here.

+1 on not repainting the entire hood. This calls for a spot repair at most. No paint is better than factory paint from my experience. Repair as small a spot as you can!

So, the car went to the dealer yesterday, they agreed that it was not a foreign object damage, and agreed to touch up the paint. When I received the car back, I was under an awning, and it was darkly lit, so I couldn't get a good sense of the repair. Once I got the car home and looked at it under my bright garage overheads, I saw that they look to have repaired it with the heat extractor still on the car, trying to shoot the paint down underneath. Frankly, it looks like crap.

I'll be sending Deysha a message about it and some other issues shortly.

^^^ I always ask HOW they are going to fix something just to be sure they aren't pulling a bonehead move like they did with your touch-up.

I know this thread is a few months old but pretty disappointed to find the same thing on my '16 shadow black GT after a wash once I parked in the garage. About the size of OPs just slightly wider. Agreed a touch up is a better idea to keep the factory paint but it's pretty disappointing.

I've touched it up with 2 layers of the factory touch up paint and 1 layer of the topcoat but it's not exactly smooth. You really can't tell under sunlight or most lighting unless you're 1 foot away and know to look directly at it but it's just extremely disappointing considering it's barely 1 year old.

FordService what would you suggest??

^^^ LG23 - Did you remove the vent to do the touch-up? What I do is let it dry for a day, then polish the touch-up paint with something like Meguiar's Ultimate Polish to smooth it out and blend the edges to match the OEM paint better.

I did not- just did this as a quick short term solution. I think I will probably do that soon and try that ultimate polish after a day or so. Is that all you use? And a little brush to brush on the touch up paint?

Also, do you know the best way to remove this touch up paint without damaging the factory paint underneath?

I've used rubbing alcohol on the touch-up paint to remove it, and it won't remove any of the factory paint. It can also be used to help level/smooth the touch-up (after it's dried for a few hours) if it's built up too high.

When I did some touch-ups on my black 2015, I didn't put any clear over the top. You have "Shadow Black", so maybe it need the clear (?). I just built up the area with 2 or 3 coats of black (Ford touch-up bottle with the bush in the cap) and let it dry between coats, then polished it smooth after it all dried for a day.
