Stopping distance is related to tires, not brakes.

Huh, I could have sworn that the ZL1 1LE is more expensive than the GT500. $72k something versus $70k?

Yes people praise the ZL1 1LE, but mostly as a track machine, not as a comfortable driver. And that's exactly what I was talking about. It's very compromised. For very wealthy people who can spend $72k for a track only vehicle, great. Some people would want more value from $72k than a vehicle you prefer not to daily. I sure would.
I was talking about the CFTP 500. I really wouldn't expect the base 500 to beat the ZLE on the road course. Even if it did, we all know the reality of the pricing, regardless of MSRP.

And I'd say most people buying a GT500 or a ZLE are quite wealthy to be honest. Sure, there are some people who are enthusiasts who will spend all their coin on it, but most owners will not daily drive one and it will be a second or third vehicle. I've yet to see a 350R on the street for example.

I know what you're saying and I agree the 500 is likely a better all around vehicle. The ZLE is a better real world value for road course work though. It really is a niche car though. Just happens to be the niche that I enjoy. I don't pretend it's for everyone.

I'm interested to see the results of a head to head. My guess would be regardless of times, the reviewers would choose the 500 due to livability and intangibles. Plus its newer and rarer. I think they both look great.

I could easily see a track enthusiast say to themselves that it sure makes a lot more sense to buy a ZLE for 65k than it does to spend 90k+ for a 500 CFTP, when all out performance is the goal.

It seems that you'd personally rather spend the 72k and get the base 500 over the ZLE and I get that thinking too. I dont think that one car makes sense over the other for everyone. Costs, usage, and subjectivity all come into play.

so the gt500 should stop quicker then since it has wider tires with bigger brakes?
No, not necessarily. There is more to it than that. Tire friction coefficient, weight transfer etc. Almost all of these brakes are far....far bigger than necessary to lock up the tires once.

A perfect example lies in this newly released GT350 VS GT PP2 comparison:

https://www.caranddriver.com/review...ck-level-2-vs-2019-ford-mustang-shelby-gt350/

The GT350 is lighter and has larger brakes, but the wider PP2 tires simply allow the PP2 to stop in a shorter distance. Which brake set though would you rather have for an extended track session in 90+ degree heat?

ZL1
$63,445 - GM discount $2k = 61,445
ZL1 1LE $70,995 - GM discount $2k = $68,995
GT500 $73,995 + dealer ripoff ADM $20k = $93,995
CFTP $ 92,495 + dealer ripoff ADM $25k = $125,999 (Mustang fanboi math)

Almost every car ever made can lock up the brakes. The ZL1 1LE must have stickier tires on it that wear out faster than those on the GT500. Another compromise.

Yes, we all know that very few people want a Camaro, so there are great deals to be had, and there are more people who want GT500s than there are cars available, so some are paying more than MSRP for the GT500. Oh, and by the way - a high advertised price doesn't mean that the seller actually gets that much for the car.

I think if you put sticky tires on the GT500 it will eat up the ZL1 1LE. And on some tracks you won't need to swap tires.

So your saying the zl1 1le tires are better then the special made cup 2 on the 500?

or GM's ABS programming is better. Or maybe the ZL1 carries it's weight a little bit different under maximum braking efforts that it eeks out a small efficiency advantage. Or maybe, just maybe the ZL1 is lighter by approx 200lbs?

Why is this so important over a couple of feet? I know it's January and all but come on.
