I know these two vehicles don't seem like natural competitors but I'm basically comparing these two for my next car.

  • They are expected to be similarly priced.
  • Both have manual gearboxes.
  • Both can seat 4.
  • STI might go better around corners -GT might be faster in a straight line.
  • 1/4 mile probably very close.
  • Both will have to be blue.

Mustang because of looks and RWD. Seems like for the past decade that Subaru's are just getting uglier each and every year.

Don't forget, the GT PP is going to perform better than the previous Boss 302 Laguna Seca around the track.

You are not the only one that hates that spoiler, it's pretty yuck.
Didn't even know that current Mustang performs that well on the track, now I'm even keener to try out the '15.

The new STI seems to be a big improvement aside from the powertrain. I was looking at getting one of the 2013s a year or so ago. What turned me off is how cheaply they are built compared to the mustang. The AWD and extra space is awesome especially here where it snows, but like was mentioned earlier the V6 mustang was faster than the pre-2015 STI.

Until the STI gets rid of that old EJ ringland munching engine I wouldn't buy one. The new GT is all but guaranteed to annihilate it in straight line performance and I'd be willing to bet it'll still destroy it around a racetrack as well.

Yea I don't think they are natural competitors. It might really depend on if you need a 4 door. Yes the mustang has back seats but I pity the fool that has to sit back there.

It might also depend on if there is a 'wing delete" option. That's redic.

Now the show car they had was awesome. Why didn't they build that?

My guess is that Subaru may do something soon to address the powertrain. As others have stated, the next Mustang will be even better on track than the Boss 302 was so it might be worth waiting to see what happens for model year '16 as that might be a better comparison if Subaru brings a new engine to the party.

Other things to consider outside of performance is day to day. I drive my Boss daily even in light snow, but I only have a 6 mile commute. If you live in the northern part of the country, the Subie may be better.

To be honest, I was contemplating a 2015 WRX/WRX STI after seeing that awesome looking concept.

Then the production version came out and it was clear we were getting very little of the concept car and a lot of the same quirky and boring design the WRXs are known for. Plus they have few creature comforts and horrible radio/audio systems.

Same 2.5L motor for the STI too and no powertrain upgrade. And the new WRX is actually slower than the previous model.

No thanks. Subaru could have hit a home run. They didn't even hit a single. I'd say it was a base on balls, and that might be generous.

I don't think the 1/4 mile will really be that close. ............ The Subaru did the 1/4 mile in 13.1 @ 104.4.

Are we hoping for a 12.5 for the '15 GT?

I'd say Mustang rear seats are ok, maybe not for adults and long distances, but most of us only need them for a baby seat or something similar anyway.
Hoping that snowboards can fit into the Mustang easily - that would be a huge plus for me.

No, but hoping for a trap speed of at least 110 mph. The AWD Subaru sticks at the launch so it gets a low ET, but 104 mph isn't that impressive really.

According to this at 3:24min, current model, with a TP, is already there, so I'd expect bit more from a '15 GT with a track pack.

I don't think the 1/4 mile will really be that close. Motor Trend just tested a 2015 STI in a comparison test between a BMW M235i, Mercedes CLA45 AMG, and the Subaru. The Subaru did the 1/4 mile in 13.1 @ 104.4.

The STI did beat the other two cars on a road course however.

The STI came off as an impressive car in that review. I like the STI, but only as a hatchback. The sedan version doesn't quite do it for me. Also the concerns about that engine are troubling. Although I do have a coworker with an STI and he and I have be en to many a track day with no issues. He is very fast as well. A few seconds faster around Laguna seca than I am in my z.

Don't think the STI is really cross shoppable with a Mustang. I owned one in 09 and have worked on many Subarus. Here's the problem. The EJ motor has not evolved since 2002. It's still 305hp. They really can't do much with it. Even the slightest tune will start introducing issues at high rpms, particularly with respect to lubrication at the end of those H cylinders. So many blown rings on stage 1's. What I'm getting at is that the engineering on the EJ is maxed out. They're stuck. Those cars make such poor progress over the generations. For that alone I think Ford is far ahead of the game.

The 2.5L ecoboost is by far a better engine in all regards. It's modern at a minimum. I imagine the new one going into the Mustang will be even better.
