I was disappointed too, and I felt as though Ford dialed down the GT PP performance a little too much with the small tires and soft suspension. Sucks to buy a PP car with the thought that you need to swap out suspension and tires right away to get the P out of your PP car.I was definitely disappointed that the GT/PP was slower than the 1LE in Motortrend's test. However, after looking at the entire product line, it is clear that Ford wasn't trying to compete against the 1LE directly. The GT/PP was not intended to be as track focused, and instead was intended to be a bit more well rounded. However, even with that in mind, I do think that Ford needs to re-tune the GT/PP suspension package. There is something with the damping in the rear that makes the car feel floaty and a bit wallowy. I think with some tweaks to the shocks, they can make it handle better and ride better as well. It still may not beat the 1LE, but now I realize that's OK.
I do remember someone mentioning that Ford sent a survey about a track pack, so maybe there will be an option in the future that really does compete more directly with the 1LE.

I think you are right Ford was going for comfort rather than ultimate performance. I had the suspicion that Ford was creating spacing between the GT350 and the GT PP, but with the GT350 performance figures coming out, it doesn't look to me like they really had to do that.
I think the 1LE Camaro was a nice package. In the end it was the peripherals that made me choose Mustang this last time (well plus I had to keep up my Ford fan boy image). ;) I realize that ultimate track performance is not something I need as much as good sightlines and the power delivery of the Coyote just makes the car much more enjoyable to romp on compared to the more linear low end and choked-off top end of the LS whatever they put in the 1LE. Even if the internet racers can talk you down, the Mustang still has a huge fun to drive factor and I'm happy with my choice.
I do wish Ford had put active exhaust in the Mustang. That was the best thing the Camaro had that I really want.
