Why do you own a Mustang (or Mustangs)?

Was looking for a fun DD and something trackable. Did not care for the Camaro styling inside or out, already had an M, Needed to be able to take my pups so Corvette was out, did not want the Porsche tax since a racecar is already expensive enough. The Mustang looks good in/out, handles well with mods and just fun to drive.

I grew up a Chevy guy. My parents brought me home from the hospital in their brand new 1969 Chevelle, 350 4 speed, LeMans blue with white interior. I had mostly Chevy's growing up- '79 Malibu that I swapped a 350 into, a 1982 Z28 with crossfire injection(what a bag-o-shit,) a 1984 S10 4x4, 1998 GMC Z71, but in the late 90's I had a friend with a 1995 5.0 convertible and I loved the sound and liked driving it. At his urging, I started reading Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords and 5.0 Magazine and was immediately hooked.

My first mustang (and I still have it, sitting in a yard behind a shop) was a 1990 notch back 5.0 car that I rebuilt the engine, spun a main bearing 10k miles later and rebuilt it again. I loved that car at the time, but I had kids and we got into camping so I needed a decent pickup so I got into a 7.3 Powerstroke and had A LOT of fun messing with that truck. (I still have it sitting at another guys shop). My father liked my '90 so much he bought a black 2002 GT and drove it for several years until it got too hard for him to get in and out of.

I was out of the mustang world for about a decade, went through a divorce and wanted something to make me feel good about myself and excite me again, so I jumped in with a 2009 GT500 that had some aftermarket goodies and I went nuts on suspension upgrades, bigger injectors, bigger supercharger, etc. I absolutely LOVED that car and was devastated when I totaled it. I knew that I wanted to get back into a mustang and at first I was going to buy another S197 GT500 and swap everything over from the old one because I bought it back from the insurance company, but I had heard such good things about the Coyote and the S550 platform in particular, I decided to go THAT route instead. I found a 2018 non-pp Sherrod conversion with side pipes at the same dealer I bought my GT500 from. It had a little over 6k miles on it in late 2021 and the price was decent so I bought it. I had them remove all the gaudy Sherrod badging before I picked it up and handling-wise, it did all the things my GT500 did with a ton of suspension work in it, but it was a more comfortable ride. The only thing it didn't do as well was the power, especially down low, So I got a Whipple stage 2 and went from there. It's been a love/hate relationship with it since, mostly because of my own doing, but that is well documented elsewhere.

My son has a 2005 V6 mustang and a BEAUTIFUL 2017 Rio Red GT premium car. I also am partners on a 2004 Terminator convertible that is being rebuilt right now. I guess you could say I have been smitten.

1st car was an 83 GLX convertible. Not a bad first car for a 16 year old at the time. Since then I had another 83 GLX, but with the 5.0, a highly modified 85 GT that almost every day I regret selling, and a 91 GT.

I did not like the 94-2014 versions, but when I saw the S550 at the OKC auto show in 2014 I fell in love with it. I was a competitive endurance athlete at the time and ended up dealing with rhabdomyolysis that caused me to go through a mini-mid life crisis, so I bought a 2016 GT. I enjoyed her for 10+ years.

Once the Mach 1 came out, I wanted one and finally have mine. She's primarily a track car and I enjoy the hell out of her.

I'm on my 3rd Mustang, bought them all new, a 2011, 2012 and a 2018. The 2011 was a 5.0 manual, the 2012 was a V6 manual and the 2018 is a 5.0 automatic. I totaled the 2012 and then bought the V6; after a number of years I wanted the new improved 460 HP 5.0 so I bought the 2018. I got it in a automatic, as I hated the MT82 6-speed manual in both previous cars, this was a mistake as the 10R80 had a lot of design problems for the first 4 years. I will not buy another Mustang as now I hate the MT82 6-speed and the 10R80 automatic. You can't get a Tremec transmission in the GT, you have to buy something like a Dark Horse, or a used Mach 1, GT350, or GT500. I want a 6-speed Tremec in the GT and will not buy another Mustang until they offer that option.

I grew up in the 70's. Seeing the Mustangs especially the '68's to '73's. Then as I got older in the later 70's the Cobra II. As a kid that was my dream car. In my life I've owned first car 1976 Mustang II 2+2. Back then cars like that was cheap. In my early adult years I've had 5 more Mustang II's two with 302's one of them I built with a 300hp shot of nitrous. A '74 with a 302 added in it. The rest were one v6 and 2 4 bangers. Then I've owned a '08 GT Premium now my '22 GT Premium. I love this car. I will love it even more when the 5 year/60k warranty is over and I install the supercharger .
I like other sports cars, I've owned a '73 Dodge Demon and a '92 Camaro. But I'm a Ford man and always loved the Mustang the most.

I owned a ’97 Corvette for more than 20 years, but eventually realized I was approaching the age when I’d be expected to adopt the official Corvette uniform. The shorts, socks and New Balances just weren’t me, so I bought a GT350 instead.

Besides, Mustangs are where I started. I learned to drive in 1971 in a ’66 coupe with a three-speed on the floor, and I’ve owned my ’65 fastback since 1984—although it has spent most of that time undergoing what may be the world’s longest GT350-tribute restoration.

So apparently I own a Mustang because, after a brief 20-year Corvette detour, I finally came back to my senses.

The start of all this for me was that when I was a kid, my dad had a 1966 Mustang with the 289 all built up the way he wanted, he doesn't have it anymore unfortunately, but he talks about it and what it meant to him, to this day. I was hooked then and still am, I absolutely love Mustangs and I always will, they are the reason I'm even a "car guy".

This is my 6th Mustang and I can guarantee this wont be my last lol. There been two instances where my dad and I have had Mustangs at the same time and those are some of my favorite times, talking about them, working on them, and planning things for them together.

I am in the UK. Back in the 80s I drove a lot of the "European Mustang", The Ford Capri. The proper ones not these fake EV crap.

Had family cars whilst kids were growing up, but now they have all but flown the nest and all drive themselves too so its my time to have what I want.

I have always liked Mustangs (from afar) as they weren't really offered here as RHD cars in the UK until 2015 I think. A neighbour had a grabber blue GT that I used to look at and could hear whenever he was going out, so one day, knocked on the door, asked if I could have a play and that was it. Hooked.

Bought a GT which I had for just over a year and then traded her for a mach 1. Both were/are daily drivers and there is no better way to start a day than hearing that coyote kick in to life.

I have joined a car club, monthly coffee meets, been to shows and had mine displayed so there is also a social side to ownership which is great.

The amount of "rev it" requests from kids whenever I am out is unbelievable too ha ha

This is awesome! I have a serious question as I have not been to the UK so I don't know; how are the road conditions/pavement quality and are there areas where you can take your Mach 1 out and have some fun outside the city or cities?

Also, how do the police react to Mustangs? I imagine the same as over here; if one is driving like a knucklehead then press hard three copies but if one is driving responsibly generally no issue?

Hiya, most roads are full of potholes so not the best! A lot of narrow country roads that are not used to seeing big wide mustangs either. LOL

Motorway (freeway equivalent) allows you to cruise a bit more but the speed limit is 70mph on motorways and TBH, if you travel more than 20 miles without seeing roadworks and having to slow down, you have done well!!!
Track days are an option but I have not done this yet.

Cops are like anyone else really. You can get a decent one, or you can get an @rsehole.

I am a mature driver and so tend not to attract too much attention even though there is only about 500-600 Mach 1s in the UK, so its more interest from them than anything else. Suppose if you behave and keep yourself to yourself, you are fine

Supra…. Needed a 3rd seat for my daughter
Corvette C7,C8. Same reason as above
Camaro… about to be discontinued. Worried about aftermarket support. Outward Visibility.
Challenger…markup, poor outward visibility and about to go extinct. Theft issues
Charger….rediculous markup. about to go extinct with high theft issues. High insurance premiums. No manual
BMW m3… brother already had one. Didn’t like the new beaver front grille.

Mustang checked all the boxes. Mach 1 gave it the added bonus of uniqueness/heritage. It was and still is the perfect car for me. 3 years now with 20 plus car shows and counting. .Glad I got it. Still planning that track day.
