Need help diagnosing high CHTs - one radiator fan won’t run during active test (2015 GT ProCharged)

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to diagnose an overheating issue before I start replacing more parts, and I wanted to get some opinions from people who have seen this before.

Car:

* 2015 Mustang GT 5.0
* ProCharger Stage 2
* Around 850+ hp
* Mishimoto 160° thermostat (about 3 years old)
* Stock/base GT radiator (not Performance Pack)

Symptoms:

* On cooler days (70-80°F), the car runs pretty well. Driving home yesterday in the 70s, my CHT never even reached 200°F.
* On hot days (90°F+), especially in traffic or after idling, my Cylinder Head Temperature climbs into the 240-250°F range, which obviously concerns me.
* Lund Racing told me this is not tune-related. They said my tune already commands the fans on earlier than stock and suggested checking the thermostat, water pump, fans, or a possible air pocket.

Today I used my Autel IM508 with the engine OFF (cold engine) to run active tests on the cooling fans.

Results:

* High-speed fan test: Only the driver-side fan comes on. The passenger-side fan does nothing.
* Low-speed fan test: Neither fan comes on, although I can hear a relay clicking when I command the test.

Before I start replacing parts, I’m trying to figure out what this points to.

Questions:

1. On a 2015 GT, should both fans run during the high-speed active test?
2. Does this sound like a failed passenger-side fan motor, a fan control module issue, wiring, or something else?
3. Could having only one fan operating explain why the car is fine in 70-80°F weather but gets into the 240-250°F CHT range once ambient temperatures are above 90°F?
4. Since I already have a brand-new Reische 170° thermostat, would you replace that first, or would you diagnose the fan issue before touching the thermostat?
5. Any fan upgrades better than stock?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can't see the thermostat being the difference.
Search; the 160 degree tstat has a bad reputation for running higher temps than the stock unit. The best hypothesis I found is it restricts flow even when fully open.

#1 - it's very likely it should.
#2 - my first guess is the fan. Easy enough to check by applying power directly.
#3 - yes
#4 - I'd address the fan issue first.
#5 - I don't know if there are better but I know aftermarket can be worse. I wouldn't choose aftermarket over OEM if I didn't have to.

I had a very similar issue last summer with my Edge. One fan died. Temps were fine while moving but rose quickly when driving slowly or when ambient temperature was higher. Talking upper 80's, low 90's. I was 500 miles from home and dealers were out of stock. The aftermarket fan sounds like a locomotive but at least it works.

Jump the fan relays to see if they work. If you’re driving on the highway it shouldn’t matter if the fans are working or not. At low speeds yes it will make a difference if your fans are operating correctly. Definitely check the fans before worrying about the thermostat.

True, but I don't see it making a 50 degree difference. Seems like it would cause the problem more often than just when hot.

The fans are the problem, but that stat is something I'd get rid of anyway.

I tested all three fan relays and they are all good they all click and the 3 fuses are also good. I put the AC on max and that second fan doesn’t turn on.

Don’t test the relays jump the relays it will manually turn on your fans so you can check the circuit and see if the circuit is working. Take a piece of wire connect it where the two large prongs plug-in. that will jump the circuit and force it to turn on. Iif the fan turns on you know the circuit is good if it doesn’t then you know there’s a problem with that circuit
