In May of 2023 you could get an oil pan to cam covers (no intake), long block stock Gen 3 Mustang GT engine for under $5k. I believe Havoc_5.0 paid $4600+ in May of 2023. I priced one back in October and they were listing for $10,800 and his guy could get it, the SAME part number for about $9300. This stuff is getting crazy. The Aluminator short block was Under $4k not too long ago. That's not the case anymore.

Too bad they didnt just use them on everything. One part to inventory across the V8s.
Back in 2015 they decided to use the ā€œbossā€ con rods in everything for a similar reason.

Wouldn’t it be great if the same 5.2 block/crank/rods were used in everything, with the only difference being pistons/compression.

It would be a dream come true. I am certain there is money to be saved by having the least amount of part numbers and different inventory

10g is not bad for all that. I dont suppose the heads from a gen 3 coyote will fit.
I'm pretty sure the gen3 heads will work on a 5.2 block. I built one, at least, but I haven't run it yet.

As a side note, the engine has the "noisy" 2618 pistons and they aren't audibly different from stock and don't set off the knock sensors.

So many options available to us. Nice to know

Owner got the car running today with the following:
  • Stock block
  • Stock crank
  • Gt500 rods
  • Mahle 10.4/1 forged pistons
  • Stock heads and cams
  • Boss tensioners
  • Gt500 oil pan and pump
The idea was to make it tough and also have more tolerance to and power on pump gas. We made some simple tune changes to accommodate the compression ratio. It started and drove with no issue. Once he gets through the break-in period we’ll start finding knock limits at the new compression ratio. I’m super interested to see where the knock limits are now.
Hey Mike, is the person who did this rebuild interested in more work? I need another engine, and I believe we live in the same area

This was a garage build and someone’s first one, done step by step using the ford manual. I helped some but he did 80% of it.

Is this for a Mustang or f150?

Spent most of today tuning the new motor. It seems to take 3-4 deg more timing on true pump gas before finding the knock limits. At 1.9 load was touching 20 deg and at 2.1 load maybe 17. Honestly I was hoping to be able to add 5-6 but it just wouldn’t take it.
