What weight oil do you use?

Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-30, but I’m switching to Amsoil for my future oil changes, since it’s made in the USA. I’m not sure where Motorcraft makes its engine oil.

Getting ready to do my first change tomorrow and thinking of going with 5w30 instead of 20.

Car gets DD regardless of weather and M-F it sees a 80 mile round trip.

I don't track it but do a few WOT pulls each week. Might see the drag strip 1-2 times this year, maybe.


Wondering if stepping up to 30 will be beneficial, and what you guys run.

5W50 synthetic in my 2.3L HPP because that’s what’s recommended and that RS engine is psychotic.

5W20 synthetic blend for the past 15 years in my 2011 5.0. I don’t really drive it hard; maybe the occasional 7000rpm run up just for kicks and grins. No ticks, no noises, no problems, car gets driven ~1000mi a year and the oil gets changed at the end of each season before it goes into winter storage for six months. Oil comes out looking like new.

I tried 5w30 once and noticed the oil pressure was about 10 psi higher during cold starts and about 5 when driving.

So until I figure out what’s better, I decided to go back to 5w20

All else being equal a higher pressure offers better support in the bearings. The crank and rods ride on a film of oil, the added pressure increases the film strength.

I know someone will nit pic this but this is the simple answer.

Never got around to spending time understanding the impact with the oil pressure.

That is what Ford specs in all the new Coyotes. Nothing internally changed as far as clearances.

Euro spec oils generally carry an ACEA rating rather than just API. Many of the ACEA specs have requirements similar to diesels (higher viscosity, more zddp) so they can carry a gasoline/diesel dual rating. Also many of the euro auto manufacturers have different specs vs American cars so they tailor them to those. I believe pennzoil even has one called AV for Audi/volkswagen.

I normally would say "YEA!" for higher zinc/ZDDP content, but that was with my AC Cobra that had no cats at all (or mufflers for that matter really! LoL...). I used to run the old the old diesel oils (15W40) becasue they used to have much higher zince/ZDDP content. But that isn't rue anymore.

Wouldn't the higher ZDDP content (like the European oils) actually be BAD for a stock exhaust Mustang/car that's running cats?

Hey! I just remembered, as of last winter, my 2020 no longer has cats!
Is there anything else preventing me from using a high zinc/ZDDP content oil, or even using a ZDDP additive to my oil when I change it?
Zinc/ZDDP helps the oil "stick" to engine parts, but it reeks havoc on catalytic converters, right?

I mean probably but I dont care that much since I drive maybe 500 miles each winter anyway. Its more just an excuse to change the oil more than once a year
