It's psychological. When there are special editions the basic item, even when trmendously capable like a bone-stock Mustang GT, seems inadequate somehow.

It's not.

While I’m guilty of falling victim to that mentality I do think you’re exactly right. The base bone stock GT is IMO an incredible street car, even more so when you consider the dollars. I bought a new 2022 with the black package, active exhaust and a spare tire for sticker price of 44K even. At the time that was a decent deal and I wish I still had it. It‘s relative of course but it’s hard to believe you can buy a car that satisfying for 44K.

Was it relatively cold when you were making the change over? Reason I ask is a hair dryer or the careful use of a heat gun may have helped to bend the tabs.

It wasn’t too bad, upper 50’s when I did it. Heating them up a bit might help, it’s just a really tight fitment. Once I got the first two of one end popped off, the rest went pretty easily. The plastic bumper support piece has 6 tabs also, those were relatively easy to pop out.

I watched the CJ Pony parts video a couple times, was pretty helpful. Start to finish it was about 2 hours. A stiff plastic pry tool or a thin flathead screwdriver is sufficient for the tabs. I used the flathead to get the first couple then just used the plastic pry tool the rest of the way.

There’s a v6 S197 around here that appears to be doing something similar. Both front and rear bumpers were off last I saw it. I’ll try to catch a pic of it next time I see it. It’s an interesting build that’s for sure, not sure it’s my thing but to each their own

Been feeling a little down the last couple days, so got in some good car therapy with my son. Installed the FP Bullitt lower grille and swapped the chrome pony for a Ford OEM black pony. The pony was a pain, broke every tab trying to put the nut on. Good thing I have rolls of 3M tape laying around, ended having to tape it.

The grille swap is tedious but not overly difficult, it’s held on by plastic tabs. Once you get a couple started it goes quick but those first few are a chore. Busted a couple knuckles in the process. I took my front wheels off to make access to the fender nuts a little easier.

Why are you feeling down? Weather? Hope nothing to bad. Any luck with that GT500 search?

If you can, please advise on this project. I need to replace this lower grill part on a GT350R. The whole front bumper has to come off like yours did? No way to sneak it in under the front end by removing the belly pan?

Learned of a death in the family Thursday night, one of my cousins (late 40’s so very unexpected).

Yes, the whole bumper needs to come off. The bumper support actually sits over top of both the upper and lower grilles a bit. So that needs to come off first before you can get to all the tabs for the grilles. I wouldn’t want to try it on the car, you need some leverage to push on the tabs (and I’m not really sure you can fully access everything with the bumper on the car anyway). The wiring for the marker lights is not very long either, so disconnect those before you fully remove the bumper also

Oh, one thing I will mention is that if a guy has some miles on their Mustang, when you remove that large belly pan, you’ll be amazed at how much dirt and how many pebbles it can hold - lol.

Yeah I watched that one too. I left the whole belly pan attached to the bumper, it’s not that heavy and I think it actually helped keep the bumper a little more balanced while taking the grille out.

I did take the front wheels off, made it a little easier to get to the fender nuts I think. The splash shields are very stiff, they didn’t flex as much as either video showed. I used a ratcheting wrench but it is possible to get a ratchet in there too
