Guys, how important is the “Shelby” name to the enjoyment of your car?

That car would never exist. Shelby would not allow the name to be used. Shelby speaks performance above stock. The name doesn't make the car, the car has to live up to the name.
Its not just about the "cool" factor. Its about the package. Sure you can make a GT handle great but the package it comes with from factory has been tuned nicely + better parts.

I had a S197GT that thing was floaty as hell stock, I upgraded the suspension it handled great but it was uncomfortable. The Mach 1 many of you talk shit on, comes nicely package too from the factory. I have no intention to change the suspension. That is another reason I will get a Shelby I like the cool factor and I love the package.

And yes I am all for upgrading its fun, but when the car comes so nicely package the upgrades you do just adds to the enjoyment.

I would love to know how much value do you think it adds having Shelby on it? if Ford produced two identical cars and the only difference was that one had "Shelby" on it how much more would you pay? And maybe more importantly would you fork over the extra cash for the cool factor of a name?
Maybe not a direct comparison, but look at the Jordan example. The shoes with his name/logo on them don’t perform any better than a regular Nike shoe yet they get a premium because it’s Michael Jordan’s name/logo. So names (and marketing around said names) do matter, at least to a good chunk of people otherwise they wouldn’t be able to get the pricing they do.

It’s probably a little more difficult to do with Shelby vs non-Shelby because the Shelby’s do come better equipped for performance than a standard Mustang. I think your closest comp might be the Mach 1 HP vs the GT350, but even then, the GT350 has certain parts that are unique/special to that car that adds to the overall performance vs the Mach. Both are great cars in their own right, but also different.

But like anything, I’m sure there’s a segment that will pay extra just because of the Shelby name/badging no matter the difference in performance. It becomes more of a prestige thing. I’m sure others will have different opinions but that’s my take.

LOL maybe I should rephrase (some). Either way you are one of the good Shelby owners, some on here just love to talk smack about it which is fine its the internet.

Tucker, I‘m assuming here you’re asking this of me. If not I apologize for the assumption. But to answer directly, in my OP I really wasn’t talking about money at all. I was talking about stuff like pride of ownership, etc. that you really can’t precisely quantify in dollars. Sure, it eventually comes at a price but that wasn’t really my point.

There are some of us that are very active with the Shelby community. That's our tie to the car. Team Shelby is very active and we hold events all over the place, not just in Vegas. We say we are a people club that revolves around a car and an extraordinary man. We are also very active in the Shelby charity. So, there is a lifestyle should you choose to live it along with the car

You guys do anything in the Chicago area, Tim? Would love to try to attend something if I can, assuming a regular ol run of the mill GT is welcome.

If a GT is not welcome I would never want to show up to that type of meet.

We have an event in LaCrosse WI August 1-4. I have a IL director in the Chicago area who is trying to get traction there. PM me and I can put you in touch with him. My saying as far your GT, from Model T to Ford GT. Actually you don't even have to own a car. Everyone is welcome.

Same here, I just know from past experiences that some groups look down on other makes/models. I would hope that wouldn’t be the case with most Mustang/Shelby groups but I prefer to ask first and avoid awkward situations. Don’t have time for that drama 🤭

Nope just asking the group what the goodwill value of the name is. To me zero. I buy the machine, and would buy at the best value. A name wouldn't sway me to pay more, but maybe others feel differently. I am genuinely curious to hear the opinions.

Clearly Ford felt there was value or they wouldn't have licensed it, but I'd also venture to say they still would have sold 100% of what they made without.

Well, I thought it was an interesting question. Let's do a bit of a mind experiment. Let's imagine that Ford offered the car we know as a GT350 in two versions - one called GT350 with Shelby's name and one called Mustang Super GT without Shelby's name. Only difference in construction is the badging. How big a difference would there be in price for the new ones, and more importantly, how big a price difference in the used market? I suspect the difference wouldn't be "zero".

All depends on what the badging looks like!
