What is the closest affordable Bourbon to Pappy?
Depends on how "affordable" you want. I love Weller 12. Same Buffalo Trace juice - basically Pappy that didn't QUITE make the cut. Still allocated, but easier to find and cheaper than Pappy.

Oh, were we really talking about trans fluid?

I just changed out my trans fluid (Tremec 3160) to the Redline D4 ATF. Actually made a noticeable improvement to shift quality, and got rid of the occasional gear nibble I was experiencing
Hi, I plan on doing the same. Do you still like the D4 and were you also considering their D6?

Saw in a different thread that you also swapped the rear diff fluid for Amsoil 75-110. Could we also use Redline 75W-110 on our cars?

Did you add the "Additive Friction Modifier XL-3" that is mentioned in the supplement on page 65:
"For complete refill of our limited slip axles, add 3.28 fl oz (97 ml) of Additive Friction Modifier XL-3 or equivalent meeting specification EST-M2C118-A. Include this friction modifier in the total fluid capacity. Our rear axles contain a synthetic lubricant that does not require changing unless you submerge the axle in water."

Anyone ever tried or investigated Amsoil DCT?
I did. Not in a 3160 but a MT82. Wasnt impressed with it. I had BG prior to that and wanted to see what Amsoil was about. I had 4 or 5 track events on it and about 1500 miles of street driving. It was "okay". Tried Motul and well ya know...its my new trans fluid.

I did not consider the D6, as it is basically the same fluid/viscosity as the Mercon LV fluid. The D4 has a slightly higher viscosity, and should provide slightly better shock load dissipation.

The Amsoil 75-110 already has friction modifier in it, however I believe that the Ford friction modifier is only necessary for the limited slip clutch type rear ends, not the Torsen diff found in PP cars, Mach1's etc.

The viscosity recommendations from Ford are a mix of protection and efficiency. Ford and any other mass market manufacturer is always trying to meet or exceed CAFE standards, and lower viscosity fluids provide slightly better efficiency in the engine/drivertrain. Ford doesn't care if your transmission lasts 200k miles, they care that it makes it through the warranty period, and that their overall fleet meets the overall minimus MPG standard set by the guvment'.

I had that debate when I changed mine...Places like American Muscle say thinks like " not required but recommended " I did read a few post where folks didn't add it and went back later and did.

I changed mine and used Amsoil 75w-95 ( if I remember correct ) and I did add a bottle to be safe.

I got mine from Rock auto for fairly cheap, actually bought 2 bottles.

Hey Warren, I've read quite a bit about the Motul. Is there a way you can pin down the differences between the Motul and Amsoil, or is one of those feel things that's kinda hard to put your finger on?

I am now running ACDelco 10-4014 with BG MGC. It shifts better than stock especially when it gets hot where I felt the stock fill was most deficient (getting too thin). I might try the XT11QDC next since this is what is the factory fill on my Fiesta ST as well and that car transmission always was flawless.

Honestly I think there is a consensus that it feels better than factory but what the driver may feel differs from transmission to transmission. I will say that I noticed more of a difference going from Amsoil to Motul than I did from BG to Amsoil. Initially the Motul felt the same but I guess I had to give it time to break in and work through the trans. The 2-3 and 3-4 shifts felt much better at low speeds and on track. Unfortunately my throwout bearing went out after my last event so it’s just sitting now. But from the 30+ or so miles I have on the Motul I have felt an improvement. At the same time I think it’s one of those things that there will be opinions on what feels better but what is better I assume will require more research like an oil lab report.
I know it wasn’t the most helpful response but i don’t want to seem like I’m overselling Motul.

If changing this fluid to something other than the Motocraft that meets the needed standard is there any impact on the warranty? Can they tell what fluid is in there if there's a problem?

Do you want to hear what you want to hear, or what you need to hear? LOL.

So, I would say the technical, legal answer is yes. You have a problem. If you’re that worried about warranty, this is probably not the thread for you. Having said that, the threat is extremely extremely low. If you had a tranny failure, it’s not going to be because you used a better fluid. If you had a failure, are they gonna check the fluid to see if you’re using the right spec? I don’t know.

And don’t say “the Motorcraft that meets the spec”. There are many other brand fluids that meet spec. It does not have to be Motorcraft.

For the love of all things sacred…. Please use the full word “TRANSMISSION”!
Trans & Tranny are simply not appropriate here. 😂
Worried about the fluids in your tranny?

I don’t use it personally but a lot of people in the Toyota community use it. It’s the same fluid used in the Toyota GT4 Supra and their other race cars
