My local Oreillys takes used oil as does my local recycle/trash center. I simply pour the old oil back into the 5 quart jugs and take with me the next time I take my trash normally. The older gentleman attendant loves it when I come because I have the large jugs. I think he takes it home with him and uses it around his farm instead of pouring into the recycle bucket :)

The question is, how do you dispose of your filters?
I simply put my filter back in the box after draining thoroughly and put in the trash.

Check your town's local website - I just did and was surprised to learn my town will pick it up curbside as long as it's in plastic jugs smaller than 5 gallons. They'll even take the filter if it's in 3 layers of Ziploc bags.

We have receptacles at our Solid Wasted Recycling Centers and the used oil is burned in some of our Power Generating Stations....not sure how many Kilowatts they get from it but it must be worthwhile since they've done it for many years!! :like:

I just take it to my local autozone but I made a mistake and forgot to take the oil in the last time on my mazda & corolla.. then this time I had changed my car truck & civic

Ended up with 29.5qts (10, 6, 4.5, 4.5 and another 4.5) and I had to drive to multiple part stores to get rid of it all and I still have 10 left

Most auto parts stores accept used oil and either recycle it or use it for their own heater.
A heater that takes oil ?

Recycling center, although now some municipalities now calls them "ecological islands", whatever that means in their minds.

The problem I found is that although they will take the oil they will usually not take the filter. Now I just wrap it up and dispose of it through regular household waste after having it drip well.

Why provision a way to recycle the oil and then not accept the filter? My guess is they have by law to accept the old oil but not the filter. The same municipalities that give those crazy sounding names don't want you to have a car so this is one of the ways they make ownership more difficult.

The question is, how do you dispose of your filters?
I let it drain till the next oil change, Almost nothing in it by then.
most times Not Ideal for most, but I cut them open remove the filter material, and recycle the metal , the filter matarial is then used to wipe down medal tools in the shed to keep rust at bay. The material goes in a coffee can and after I use a tool, it gets a wipe down .
My mechanics tools this isn't done, but the wood saws, the pipe wrenches, and farm type tools, it is.

That's hilarious. In all seriousness, I remember many years ago my uncle lived near a gravel road. He would pour his used oil from various farm tractors, etc. on the gravel road to keep the dust down. The road in that area actually looked quite a bit like asphalt.

I guess he didn't worry about contamination of his home well water or anything from it.

My dad used to dispose the old oil into the sewer, many disposed it into rivers.
A lot of things changed and for the better, mostly, until the early 2000s... then they changed again.

It used to be quite a common practice even for municipalities. I clearly remember tanker trucks with sprayer bars as wide as a lane of traffic regularly spraying oil on dirt/gravel roads to keep dust down. It was definitely a thing and it worked.

Yes, waste oil heaters are a thing. Many autorepair shops have them as they get a lot of winter heating fuel from doing oil changes.
I’ve never heard of that that’s so cool, so does the oil burn in there and then you have to refill it like the kerosene ones? I gotta look this up lol

It's very similar to oil furnaces like you see in many older homes with those gigantic oil tanks in the basement or buried in the yard.

Autozone or similar store usually will take it...but some require that you purchase your oil from that store prior...so in that case, you local county dump/recycling center would need to be used. I'm with the OP, I have the dealer do my oil service. For my SUV, the last time I compared, doing it myself saved $10. Not worth it imo.
