Wondering if I could get some guidance from others who have been in my situation.

I took my car to the track to test out my new tune and modifications, and in typical mustang fashion I ended up slipping from 1st to 2nd and the rear end kicked out. I was able to recover the initial break and slide it back from the wall. Another 5' and I would have had a recovery but I kissed the rear quarter panel.

At this point I'm upset with myself. There was a car that leaked antifreeze down the track and I was the third one to go after it was cleaned, but I know it was most likely my own driver error. Maybe I should have done a larger burnout after trying to dodge the water pit; maybe I should have just taken it slower and just have fun being there. I don't know, I had made a perfect run prior at 11.8 on track tires and thought I understood its limits.

Now I'm in the stage where I look at the car and (honestly) want to run it again to prove to myself I can run this thing then a second later think I should just say fuck it and leave the scene.

What do you guys think the damage is here? I drove it home and it drives fine. He'll, even the sensors work. I'm thinking this is a $10k repair but idk what kind of magic a body shop can do with the quarter panel.

You could try having it in track mode then toggling TCS off (the tcs light comes on when you go into track mode but you still need to toggle TCS OFF and have it say TCS OFF on the dash). With my car this mode will let me spin indefinitely as long as I keep it straight enough, and advancetrac will kick in if I start going too sideways.

Body shop is going to have to tell you that. $10K is a real possibility. At least you're not being delusional about this.

OT a bit and I guess like many things it’s just age related but I wish we wouldn’t call drag strips “tracks”. Tracks are about 2 miles long with turns, etc. and drag strips are well, drag strips. Hey, we boomers are easily confused.

Having said that, OP I hate this for you.

I attempted staying in but almost immediately went to feather because it kept moving out in the wrong direction and the last thing I was planning on doing was hitting someone else. No overcorrection or anything. I had basically corrected completely which is why just the back part kissed it and not my front or side. Just wasn't smart with my tire setup and desire to make good times. Throw in inexperience I suppose but the inexperience was in the form of being foolish with running on this setup imo.

Nitto NT555 G2 with 14k miles on them and abused. Didn't do a long burnout either.

G2s on a track are asking for trouble.
Very bummed for you

at least no injuries or freak accidents and you didn’t involve anyone else’s vehicle.
if you’re gonna drag race it again, please put a drag tire on it.

more and more tracks around me have “ no hard tire policy “
Slicks in 1 lane and DRs in the other as much as possible

The damage isn’t really terrible, I’m sorry it happened to you but I don’t believe looking at that there is any internal structural dmg. It looks cosmetic. It will be cheaper if it is cosmetic. Take it to a good body shop and have it assessed.

Another NT555 crash.

Dunno man, seems those are trash tires.
Nitto makes several tires with a 555 designation. 555R, 555R2, 555G2, off the top of my head. They are all different tires. That being said, a 555G2 street tire on a car that shifts hard on a 1-2 shift and can break traction may not be the best idea on the drag strip.

The Nitto curse. It happened to me many years ago. Never again. Believe. Sorry.
