Mid-Engine Mustang to Debut

My understanding to date is that a Flat Rock body in white is shipped to MM whereby they proceed to carve it up. If you notice the fabricated rear cradle, it looks to have mounts that then mate with the body, near where the stock ones are. Up front you can see a K-member very similar to stock. While the suspension hardware is radically different than stock, the base foundation that it all attaches to isn't too far from what came on the original BIW.

Yeah we were discussing that in another thread. At least to me and not having any inside knowledge, once Multimatic gets their hands on it it’s not really S650 as most think of it because of how they carve it up. So at least in my mind’s eye, it’s effectively not an S650 anymore like say a Dark Horse R. If that makes any sense. But yeah, it has to start from somewhere since this isn’t a ground up, bespoke chassis (at least that none of us are aware of).

The likely reason it starts out with a regular production line car is that it needs a VIN for street registration.
Ford is over the top producing specialty vehicles for sure!!

It is not a mid engine and it is not going to be a race car. Some of the tech involved in the suspension is not allowed in any racing sanctioning body, so it is just for street use or track days. It is basically built for bragging rights. The GT3 and GT4 class Mustangs that Multimatic is producing for Ford, means there will be a pretty big influx of easily available turnkey racers. Those are "front-mid-engine" cars, if the whole engine is behind the front axle line.

Front-mid-engine (FM) cars may have a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution (like an S2000)
but many are actually tail-heavy like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Ferrari California, Lexus LFA, Mercedes AMG GT, and most Viper coupes.

Now that we know the original article was referring to the Mustang GTD, we can find cutaways and whatnot showing that the engine is squarely between the front struts.

The rear-mounted transaxle will be good for weight distribution, but it's still not a mid-engine car.
