Ordered a oil filter from summit racing and it came with a dent on the bottom. Should I contact them and get a new one or is it fine to use?

I'm no oil filter professional but I doubt the baffling inside is damaged enough to matter if at all. I still probably wouldn't use but the issue is it being ordered. I buy local as needed so super easy to return/exchange.

Summit Racing is pretty good to deal with. Contact them and send them your pictures, they'll probably just send you a new one.

Yea call Summit and tell them you want a replacement. That's a pretty large dent; even if I had pulled a filter out of the box locally like that, I still would not use it.

They’ll probably tell you to just keep that one and send out a replacement. But for the record. That one will work fine. The top section of the filter doesn’t really do anything other that provide a containear.

I wouldn't use it. That S-shape in the distortion looks like a good place for a crack to develop in over time. And with it, oil seepage. Been there (different car, filter deformed with a sharp kink on installation by dealership oil change tech).

Failure mode here is fatigue, which won't happen overnight, but the sharper the kink the sooner it'll happen. If it does happen, it might take a thousand miles, or more than double that (which will be after you've forgotten about it).

Throw it out. It's a long shot but if the plate that the pressure relief (bypass) valve has been bent the valve may allow unfiltered oil through the filter. Filters are cheap, get a new one.

this. may not make a difference and it may work flawlessly until next time you need one. but why take a risk, even if slight, when it comes to your engine. just my .02 though.

I’d use it. Doesn’t look punctured or deformed. As mentioned, that area is just an end-cap. But contact them still, maybe they’ll send another that can be saved for your next service

Not punctured, but it's deformed all right.

It's also part of your oiling system's pressure boundary and subject to fatigue loading right along with system oil pressure changes. Cracks can and will develop if the area in question represents a severe enough stress concentration. Which there is no way of determining from the pictures.

Is it really worth risking, for the few dollars that you might be able to "save"?
