For modern engines, there's no need.
However for vintage iron, it's an absolute necessity.

The article states that high levels of zinc/phos cause damage to an engine increasing long term wear attacking the grain boundaries in the iron, resulting in camshaft spalling

There is more information here from the same author and if you have a flat tappet cam and no catalytic converter you need more than what is available in the average 5W20 or 10W30 compatible with engines that use a catalytic converter.
