The typical Porshe has 60% or more of it weight on the rear tires, while the Mustang is closer to 60% on the front. So 255 F/305 R will be understeer city with a Mustang.
Would drifters use that set up then?

And make it harder to kick the rear end loose (and easier for the car to go right back to understeer)? Don't think so.

I suppose you could keep throwing more power at it and hope you could balance the car on even more of a knife-edge between hanging the tail out and having it loop around on you. But it'd still be a configuration that would rather keep the tail in line behind the front.

I would LOOOOOOVE to be able to run those - I'm definitely thinking if I enjoy the track time life this year, I'll get a set of high quality tires for track only use for next year (like Cup 2s).
Don't be in any hurry to get into R-comp territory. Do your early learning on tires that aren't quite as grippy and are more progressive in the way they break away. Might as well beat up less expensive tires with the inevitable driving mistakes.

As a rank newbie and for the first few times after that, you won't be ready to drive all the way out to 1.6g lateral.

EE does a good job explaining weight distribution effects on performance. The alternative example to the 911 he provides shows, at a basic level, why cars with a ~55/45 balance like our cars perform best for handling applications with a square tire setup rather than staggered. Cars like the GT350/350R and GT500 use the stagger for built-in understeer safety.

I thought stagger was for understeer? So why would the GT base model have 235s square and the premium have 255/275? I thought Ford cared about performance?

I had no idea USAA got me tire discounts. How do I do this?
log in and click on 'member benefits' or just do a search for 'goodyear'. I didn't think to look either but the Camaro6G guys pointed it out and at the time (late Oct or Nov) the discount was 30% so I picked up a couple sets.

The base model 235/50R18s are far, far too narrow of a tire for a 3800 lb car with >430 hp. They put them on the car because they're cheap and most people will never take their car above 5/10ths its capability.

The Performance Pack 255/275 is barely enough tire for the car and the stagger is there to make it understeer at the limit. More people who buy the performance pack will drive the car near the limit. The GT350 has an appropriate amount of tire width for the weight and power of the car at 295/305. The mild stagger comes with just mild understeer. That car with 305 square handles quite well.
