Platform technology has come a long way in the past two decades. It is now possible to develop wildly different vehicles off of the same platform. For example, Camry, Avalon, Rav4 and Highlander are all off the Toyota GA-K platform. FWIW, IHS-Markit is showing Explorer off of CD6 and S750 off of D2C/D5. Basically, a modification of the current D2C platform that S550 and S650 are on. Full disclosure, I’m an automotive analyst at IHS-Markit, but on powertrains, not vehicle platforms.

Curious why you say that?
Logic and timeframes. The 2019/20 Bullitt was a anniversary model. Unlikely we will ever see another one. I believe, like many others, that the Mach 1 was supposed to be the Boss 302 but was changed because of the Mach-E fiasco. So timeframe wise we may see an S650 Boss but not another Mach. Now for the S750, who knows. Are we even going to have a V8? Rear wheel drive? Even if the answer is yes to both we are a long way off in discussing special edition S750 Mustangs

Hard to call it a Boss 302 when it's actually a 307 too.

There's no way Ford is putting a 6 liter in the s650. If you're lucky, It'll get a ecoboost V-6, perhaps in a AWD format. Hang on to your 15-21's.. The last, and greatest V8 Mustangs.

The funny thing is that when Efi came out, we all thought modifying engines was over. Then when obd2 came out we thought the same. Then when DBW came out we thought the same. I don’t doubt that modifying cars will end some day, but so far we have been wrong over and over when new tech arrives.

There will always be special models. The first year or two, it will be the Standard GT with some sort of performance package. Then a semi-halo version like the Boss/Mach/Bullitt/etc. Basically, higher performance versions of the standard GT. There will also be full on halo versions like the GT350 and GT500. The reason is because they generate interest in the brand and the model. Even if the price is too high for a person, or the seating capacity too low, they might still come in to see the car, and then walk out with an Escape, Explorer, or even a Mustang 2.3.

It also fills the slot between the halo and GT. Not everyone is going to get a GT350/500, and not everyone is going to want to pay a dealer markup, especially some of the markups being done in certain areas of the country. This way, a deal can say "look, I can't get a GT500 for you. I have one more inventory allocation this year, and I have 10 people on a waiting list. BUT...I can put you in the seat of a Mach 1, which has Blah, blah, blah...and it's almost as good as the GT350/500. More importantly, it's not just another GT, and I can get one for you in 10 weeks (or whatever the lead time is). To some people (maybe not on this forum, but to others), that might be enough. After all, they are getting a "collector's edition"

Lastly, it gives people an upgrade to the standard GT, who might want to upgrade their power after a few years, but don't want to mod it themselves and don't want to go full on GT350/500 money. I really don't expect the Boss/Mach/Cobra/Bullitt special editions to go away.

Over the past 55 years I would certainly agree with you. But we are now going through the hybrid/electric revolution. I do not think this will positively impact Ford decisions about speciality cars. Maybe there will be, hopefully, I want them. But realistically, how much interest do you think there will be for an electric Bullitt or hybrid Shelby? With A10/DCT only? I do not know but I'm thinking a lot less than what we are buying now. The Boss just may be our last V8 specialty version.

I most certainly see it continuing. I don't see BMW discontinuing the M series, or Caddy removing the V series. If they can solve the battery charging problem, then electric can certainly be a thing just due to the amount of torque those motors can put out down low.

One thing Ford could do is put in slightly beefier motors on a hybrid system to add HP and not lower your mileage. Things may change slightly, but I don't see performance cars going away. I would certainly still call the cars coming out of the high end companies in Europe (Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc) supercars, and many of those are electric or hybrid. Just because it's not a pure V8 doesn't mean performance cars won't exist anymore.

In fact, if I were Ford, I might look at an all electric mustang similar to the 2.3 in terms of horsepower and remove that engine entirely. It would provide a huge boost in their CAFE numbers for the model, leaving them slightly more room for a V8.

You make some good points, but...The “M” & ”V” series are regular production cars, not special editions.

No one is saying performance cars are going away. They will just take a different form. But do you really think anyone is going to buy a hybrid Bullitt or an all electric Shelby. I don’t know. Maybe we should start a poll.

As much as I would like to see a big V8 for it's low-end power, I can't realistically use the power my current GT has. Roads are only going to get more congested and poorly maintained. Every time I'm tempted to buy one of my "dream cars", reality sets in and reminds me I have nowhere to drive it.

If it has better performance, absolutely. If it's not as good as previous generations, no chance.
