Was it the Fox body that had the weird shifter position that was angled forward?

I hated the 18s when they came out.

Then they slowly grew on me. However there are some angles of the 18 that I just do not like at all. From the side profile, the headlights just look inferior to the lines of the 15-17. The headlights match up to the beltline of the car on the 15-17.

The straight on front shot of the 18s also just doesn't do it for me. I love the 18s from a 3/4 view on the side which really shows off the angular cut of the headlights and bumper design.

The GT500 and GT350 also look fantastic and I'm glad they didn't use the facelift.

The rear of the 18s are better though. The color matched diffuser on the base model 15-17 is just unattractive. The premium models looked okay but i think it looks best with an all black diffuser like the 18 does have. The quad tip exhaust being standard (for GTs) is nice too. Tail lights flow with the whole rear end more too. PP1 spoiler is also awesome.
The 15-17 muscular front is better looking than the droopy 18+.
The 18+ front fascia has these droop "cheeks" only a grandma would love...
100% fixed on the Mach 1 fascia. It still looks droopy, but they fixed the "cheeks"..

The back of the 18+ is nicer.

Had it not been for the European market, I don't think they would have changed it that much at all and left them all like the GT350/500

The Mach I fascia doesn't do it for me - it looks vaguely retro now, probably because it resembles the 15-17 version more. I like the wider lower grill opening of the 18-20s, and the more triangular fog light coves.

I like both gens for different reasons. The 15-17’s have a classic look, the 18+ have a mean look. I will say the 15-17 looked like they where lower in the back than the front due too the nose being higher. I don’t care for the reverse rake look.

I am amazed people even notice the little details mentioned. I had to go look at my car when somebody mentioned hood vents... sure enough it has them!

Gen II's don't look terrible (they just had terrible engines).

But I just have a soft spot for the Genn III's.

I think the Mustang 2 looks like the Pinto from which it came from.

I like the newer ones because they remind me of the '68 hood vents:

So...yeah, I like some retro design touchs and dislike some others, no rhyme or reason. "A foolish consistency...":cwl:

Once a detail pops out at you as being not all that harmonious with the rest - what you're imagining the car should look like perhaps being your basis - I'm afraid you just can't un-see it as being deficient.

By way of example, up close I don't think the little character crease in the upper portion of the S550 quarter panels looks all that great (or that it even has much reason for being there). Only when you step back far enough to see the whole side without turning your head or shifting where your eyes are focusing on does it begin to make sense.

And the Fox body looks like a tarted up Escort...yet I still love them in all their boxy 80's glory.

68 is ny favorite year. My lottery winnings are totally buying me a Revology 68 Fastback . Candy red with dual white stripes. I haven't put a lot of thought into this...
Yeah, my brother's used 68 convertible is my touchstone, after nearly fifty years.

Huh ? Classic look ? Whaddya mean? There's styling cues all over the 15-17 from the 1969 Mustang for sure. The 18+ front has too many angles. If I wanted angles, I'd buy a Cadillac. Also the grill is too 'squished' on the 18+. The MACH 1 front looks like Ford took some styling cues from SALEEN. Not bad, but not great.

It does. But it also looks more like the original 1964 Mustang than any other generation.

Anytime Pinto has ANYTHING to do with Mustang I think one can safely assume it just won't work out too well.
It's just weird. But hey, those were some weird times.
