I’ll be 60 in a few months. I

I drove a 2017 at the dealership but we didn’t floor it. There was no “wow factor.” I haven’t driven an Ecoboost so that is something to do, but you miss the point. I’m running out of life and want something different. It was supposed to be a Corvette and almost bought a Z06 last spring and actually had a hold on one. Then the Tesla’s. I figured I’d keep the V6 an still do but mess about with it. But my last minute look for a 2017 GT was it for the 5.0. I don’t trust the present engine and that is that (hint it’s the plasma coating). I’ve moved on.

The 7.3 is the current interest but we shall wait and see the actual weight, dimensions and specs to be sure / just speculation now. And I want to check out those conversions. Ford would only predict those if there were already queries...

This is not over yet - or - till the fat lady sings...

All I have to add to the above is:

Driving a 2017 S550 5.0 is no comparison to driving a 2018 S550 5.0 IF comparing 6R80 to 10R80; now if comparing 2 equally chosen MT82’s and getting past the disintegrating clutch discs and the shift forks that break like twigs, maybe there’s an apple to apple comparison.

——

As for the 7.3 - yes it’s interesting, but when it comes down to it - there’s always something better and anyone can out mod and out perform any factory supplied engine - it’s the facts. It’s been the case since the original “5.0 Movement” from the inception of the 79-93’s - bigger is always better, especially when you have the ingenuity and can do it better and bigger than what was offered through Ford.

I’m from the Fox Era, in fact my prior 18 Mustangs were Fox 5.0’s, with the exceptions of 2 original SVO’s, 1 1996 Cobra and 1 1968 Mustang. My stomping ground was (and still is) Corral.net, been a member over there since inception - with more tech and posted threads than most members with combined posts on this site alone. Corral was the only true Mustang website before “forums” even existed when it was a true bulletin board type of system. The Fox 5.0 got us to where we are today - LMR sprang up from the Fox Era, CJ Pony Parts got much larger, Mustang websites AFTER Corral popped up faster than a corner drug store and MANY 1/4 mile records were set by MANY well known Fox 5.0 Enthusiasts as well as those who went Pro 5.0.

For those Mustang newbies or those not familiar with the true 80’s-90’s 5.0 Movement, I suggest getting your favorite beverage and some snack and visit this thread I had started, which blew up into something larger than I had expected:
https://www.corral.net/#/topics/1152527

Yes it would be great if there were a 7.3 Mustang - but even so, it can be outdone by the wayward backyard mechanic. The sad thing is, even if Ford popped a 7.3 into a Mustang, there’s still going to be the supposed “I bleed Mustang” crybabies who will have SOMETHING negative to say about it... LMFAO

I say do it, but I’d like to see someone pull off a similar swap before it’s an actual production offering - THAT is where the real world Enthusiast proves it can be done, eliminates the “what if” and brings everyone back to reality.

Cheers!

I am about 95% aligned with this guy. Love his delivery. I absolutely howled when he talked about VCT for Fox body :cwl: :handsinair:

Careful there GM guy.

I loved playing with my blue fox body distributor - one bolt and a Snap-on distributor wrench I still own and you can change things on the fly in many ways - no tunes needed.

Then...

I went to an LT1 engine with the crap-tastic optispark. Nothing you could do with that “better idea” right under the inevitable leaking water pump and a big job replacing all of that. Then a few months later you get problems again...

I just had to inject that into the conversation...

Oh...

And then there were the oil leaks - but I’ll leave that for another conversation...

Peace...

I think you are taking my POV the wrong way. The reason I am howling at his description is he broke down what VCT does to the brutal barest elements.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast....

I hear you but they were fun engines to play with. I added in the oil leaks of the LT1 after you quoted it. The leaks were so bad and after a rear seal and front seals were replaced. When I got rid of it you could see the oil patch via google satellite photos. I kid you not and I’m sure I saved that photo. A sexy engine but never again. After 18 years that 5.0 never leaked...

And then... who (sitting in a closet fapping self?) would ever want a 7.3 liter engine in a mustang..? What purpose does it serve, other than self-fluffication and mental ejaculation?

That is the essence of being a car enthusiast!

This is an F250 / 350 / 450 engine. End of story. He makes one very good point that I had overlooked with regard to the fleet issue. The F250 / 350 / 450 products have diesel available. But he mentioned government fleets. A lot of city / county / state governments have fuel requirements for purchasing fleet vehicles. Some of them specifically state NO DIESEL. This is where the 7.3L will clean up.
The other huge reason for this engine is that Ford needed another good option below the 6.7L Powerstroke, and getting diesels approved in Class 1-3 vehicles these days by EPA/CARB since the VW Dieselgate is a truly awful and risky process. The 3.0L Lion in the F150 was difficult enough. The 7.3 gas will make a good amount of "smaller" diesel-like torque, and as Alex said, will be much cheaper and much easier to certify. It would suck donkey in a performance car (confirmed by those in the know in Dearborn), but for a rental pick-up, a flatbed, a landscaping or utility truck? Fantastic for hauling and towing stuff.

No it is not^^...
If you purchased a 7.3 liter engine and spent YOUR OWN money and stuffed a 7.3 into a Mustang... = the essence of being a car enthusiast.

But as it stands, asking/pleading/threadcrapping on & on about a production version of something that just not logical/viable...(?), is just well wishing. And dreaming simply takes away from legitimate discourse.

Not-to-mention... you have never mentioned why YOU keep wanting this. What does 7.3 do for you? Why not 10 liters..?

Well Ford isn’t asking guys like me what displacement we wanted for our one off cars.

It just happened they made this simple easy to modify engine and it fell into the car enthusiast’s lap but with some caveats. For old school guys like me, iron blocks and pushrods and roller rockers get my blood pumping. Plus it’s a big block that I long ago gave up on. If someone (and there will be) sets up shop where you give them your car and they swap it - well then I’m probably in! This is age specific so I expect most to scratch their heads on this one. But those with a like history like me will get the allure of this swap.

It will happen for SEMA if Ford puts a wiggle in it and starts making the motors now.

Because it’s called: “GODZILLA”!

This engine didn’t become GODZILLA - This engine was born GODZILLA!

When the GODZILLA engine wakes up in the morning - it’s GODZILLA. That other engine whatever it’s called - oh yah- FP 460 is just some godless, soulless hunk of metal. But GODZILLA is what it is warts and all (soon to be called character) and we love it for what it is. When I finally get it swapped in and finally put the 7.3 badges on, I will kiss the fender, make myself a coffee, bask in the sunlight looking at that glorious engine and pronounce to the world: LONG LIVE GODZILLA!!!!!

Should someone tell this dude that the common usage for 'Godzilla' in the car world refers to the Nissan GT-R?

Not anymore!

And “Son of Godzilla” will not work as it’s a V8 and not a V6.

So the two can live side by side...

Tempting and I love the carborator that the kids would never understand. But it’s a GM engine! Can’t put a GM engine in a Mustang! I’d have the shits for a week if that happened (and then I’d swap it out).

GM Engines like that LT1. Decided to stop the oil leaks from the front timing chain cover. The mechanic called me up to show me the kit. A plastic pouch with all kinds of small rubber bits! But I think he screwed up on this teeny tiny o-ring like gasket that fails if it’s not positioned absolutely perfectly. So it was all for naught and soon leaked again!

Never again!

Oh, and the guys on the Corvette forums telling you the oil leaks are just something you have to live with...
