I’ll be 60 in a few months. I
I drove a 2017 at the dealership but we didn’t floor it. There was no “wow factor.” I haven’t driven an Ecoboost so that is something to do, but you miss the point. I’m running out of life and want something different. It was supposed to be a Corvette and almost bought a Z06 last spring and actually had a hold on one. Then the Tesla’s. I figured I’d keep the V6 an still do but mess about with it. But my last minute look for a 2017 GT was it for the 5.0. I don’t trust the present engine and that is that (hint it’s the plasma coating). I’ve moved on.
The 7.3 is the current interest but we shall wait and see the actual weight, dimensions and specs to be sure / just speculation now. And I want to check out those conversions. Ford would only predict those if there were already queries...
This is not over yet - or - till the fat lady sings...
All I have to add to the above is:
Driving a 2017 S550 5.0 is no comparison to driving a 2018 S550 5.0 IF comparing 6R80 to 10R80; now if comparing 2 equally chosen MT82’s and getting past the disintegrating clutch discs and the shift forks that break like twigs, maybe there’s an apple to apple comparison.

As for the 7.3 - yes it’s interesting, but when it comes down to it - there’s always something better and anyone can out mod and out perform any factory supplied engine - it’s the facts. It’s been the case since the original “5.0 Movement” from the inception of the 79-93’s - bigger is always better, especially when you have the ingenuity and can do it better and bigger than what was offered through Ford.
I’m from the Fox Era, in fact my prior 18 Mustangs were Fox 5.0’s, with the exceptions of 2 original SVO’s, 1 1996 Cobra and 1 1968 Mustang. My stomping ground was (and still is) Corral.net, been a member over there since inception - with more tech and posted threads than most members with combined posts on this site alone. Corral was the only true Mustang website before “forums” even existed when it was a true bulletin board type of system. The Fox 5.0 got us to where we are today - LMR sprang up from the Fox Era, CJ Pony Parts got much larger, Mustang websites AFTER Corral popped up faster than a corner drug store and MANY 1/4 mile records were set by MANY well known Fox 5.0 Enthusiasts as well as those who went Pro 5.0.
For those Mustang newbies or those not familiar with the true 80’s-90’s 5.0 Movement, I suggest getting your favorite beverage and some snack and visit this thread I had started, which blew up into something larger than I had expected:

Yes it would be great if there were a 7.3 Mustang - but even so, it can be outdone by the wayward backyard mechanic. The sad thing is, even if Ford popped a 7.3 into a Mustang, there’s still going to be the supposed “I bleed Mustang” crybabies who will have SOMETHING negative to say about it... LMFAO
I say do it, but I’d like to see someone pull off a similar swap before it’s an actual production offering - THAT is where the real world Enthusiast proves it can be done, eliminates the “what if” and brings everyone back to reality.
Cheers!
