Hey Guys

I want to get a GT and can't decide if I should get a manual. I have never driven a manual car but getting a GT without a manual seems be just wrong, just wrong I say. Sad thing is that the wife can drive stick, I guess I could let her teach me, oh the embarrassment.

I'm guessing with 400 pounds of torque it can be that hard to learn.

Get the manual! It's worth it. More fun, yes the new autos can be quicker on the drag strip but the manual is much more fun on the street and road course

My wife has been complaining ever since I ordered the mustang because I ordered a manual. My wife doesn't know how to drive a manual either. I never showed her on my past cars. I told her that The mustang only comes in a manual. I didn't tell her the reason that it only comes in a manual is due to the performance pack:)

I got the manual because it is more fun to drive.

It's more fun. That's all.

It's less efficient, slower, and less practical, but I think it's undoubtedly the more enjoyable option.

These are pony cars for crying out loud, not some 6-figure pre-paddle shifter era Ferrari super car. How long has Ford been selling automatics on Mustangs? Or Chevy on Camaros and Corvettes? Nothing wrong with an automatic if that's your thing. People who commute in heavy traffic, drag strip guys, people with bad knees, people who just don't feel like rowing gears, etc all have valid reasons for driving automatics.

I have a manual because that's what I enjoy, pure and simple. It's fun and keeps me more involved in my drive. As far as the torque/hp, don't sweat learning in a GT. The S550 (and S197) clutches are very forgiving easy to drive, and today's 400+ hp cars are very mild mannered at low speeds when you want them to be. The throttle responses are generally pretty even, so you won't get that immediate torque response like some kind of '69 GTO. Actually I prefer my manual when I have to keep the speed down in school zones and parking lots. Come to think of it I prefer it at all speeds. It's just easier for me to control (I've only tried cruise control once in my life...freaked me out).

i'd rather drive the car than have the car half drive itself. i also think it's safer because you are paying more attention to the road and the car rather than texting with an automatic

I got a manual because I can actually control the car with it. I feel more in touch with the car. Its more fun. I keep seeing people complaining about driving in traffic with it. IMHO if someone is complaining about that, they are a lazy person. I drive in an hour of traffic on the way to work and on the way home and even with stop in go, I don't actually have to shift a bunch. Its normally 1-2, coasting and staying in 2nd gear most of the time. Beyond that, I've driving a manual so much of my life, I don't even think about, its habit.

How much fun is it to pull up to a light and just smash the pedal? My 10 year old kid could do that.

Anybody can turn a wheel, mash on a gas & brake peddle. It takes a real driver to handle a manual!

That was the nicest thing that I could think of. IMHO, all performance or sports cars should be manual...period. I don't agree with any of this, "less efficient, slower and less practical". This maybe true for someone that has very little experience with a manual.

Because I'm a man. I eat red meat and drink beer as well.

On a serious note, I taught my wife to drive a manual out of necessity about ten years ago. Now she prefers manual transmissions. Also, did I mention our new GT is her DD? Gotta keep the lady happy.
