The sheer joy I get from knowing I'm throwing the car into its gears and that I'm controlling the car and it's not controlling itself is worth it to me. Driving an automatic just takes all the fun out of driving, and it's quite boring. I plan on keeping this car for the long haul, and using it to teach my children how to drive stick, although by the time they are old enough the stick shift may be long gone. But it's just something more rewarding about driving manual.

I got a manual because I enjoy it and have always driven them since my very first Mustang. If you get an auto simply because you've never driven a manual, you can learn easily. If you want an auto (for whatever reason) because you prefer it, get an auto

Side note: My kids will all learn a stick. We just bought my daughter a Jetta and it has a stick. She learned in a few hours and loves it. I felt it my duty for them to be prepared for whatever is thrown their way. ;)

I have to have a manual. I think it's fun. It's a challenge driving smoothly, picking the correct gears, downshifting to accelerate, starting out on a hill with someone close behind you, just lots of things to play with and learn. I even love creeping along in bumper to bumper traffic, nailing it in first messing around, etc. The new Mustang GT has a really nice, soft clutch pedal so even an old man like me doesn't have problems pushing it in.

I can tell you I remember at 13 learning to drive a stick on my parents' '76 Super Beetle that at first it will seem like there are way too many things to do. You will get used to it, though. Torquey V8s are fairly easy to learn stick on. There's less temptation to slip the clutch too much.

Automatics are really good now. They get better fuel economy and they are much easier to drive (just point and shoot). However, one last reason for buying a manual is Ford charges $1000 less for one. I'm cheap enough that's a strong reason for me.

...People who commute in heavy traffic, drag strip guys, people with bad knees, people who just don't feel like rowing gears, etc all have valid reasons for driving automatics...
Three out of the four reasons for an auto above apply to me yet I still drive a manual. As others have said, it is just more fun. I feel more connected to the car. Every time I drive it is an experience, not just another boring drive. Autos in the pony/muscle/sports car segment have their place, and I will never knock anyone for having one. Just not for me.

Hell, I've been driving since 1979 and never owned an automatic. I can't even recall any of my friends in school back then that owned one.

LOL
I'll throw a spanner in there.

I've always only sworn by manual.
Got an auto or nothing deal with the wife, so I decided to make a compromise.

Best thing ever.
Of course it's sluggish in Drive, but how many of you guys have actually tried a GT Auto and used the sequential mode???

I've done 1000mi on it, and I can tell you it's a LOT of fun.
Does the heel and toe for me, shifts up quicker than I could...

Way way way better than I expected.
Go and try one before you make comments please.

i'd rather drive the car than have the car half drive itself. i also think it's safer because you are paying more attention to the road and the car rather than texting with an automatic
Yep :headbang:

When I drive an auto I get really bored and feel like I'm just getting myself to a destination. When I drive my stick I'm enjoying the trip. I learned to drive with a stick. Took my test with a stick. Have always owned a stick. When I was just out of college my first car was a stick because it was less expensive than an auto... up front and long term maintenance. I learned to love it. When I lived in the Midwest, I felt confident in all driving conditions - it's very easy to slow down and even stop without even touching the brakes = no slipping and sliding.

I read a stat somewhere that said only 10% of all cars sold are manuals, so it's obviously not for everyone.

Once available in Europe I'll order for sure a manual. Got an auto in my other pony (66 Convert) and if you ask me that's were an automatic belongs...not in a fastback EB or GT.

Convertible = cruising, Fastback = fun !

A manual is just more fun, gives you total control over the RPM range, an automatic will tend to shift before you approach red line for example.

I've heard stories of some cars not being stolen or car jacked because the perp saw the manual transmission and couldn't drive one, who knows

I wouldn't recommend learning to drive a stick on a a brand new Mustang GT, get a old 90's Toyota of some sort as a learning vehicle

I'm getting a manual because it's 10k Euros cheaper than getting a automatic. Manual gearboxes are the default here, unless there is some special reason (hybrids and electric cars come to mind) to have it, an automatic gear box is considered a 'luxury option'. Also, for some reason automatics with a regular petrol engine always get a worse energy efficiency rating here, making it more expensive because of the higher emission tax tariffs.

If all things were equal, I would still drive a manual, because I don't buy a Mustang as a luxury car to cruise in style. (I would have gotten a BMW 4 series if I wanted that) You get a pony car to DRIVE it ...
