Who has ordered Spare wheel/tire?

I seemed to recall, and just did a quick internet check, it seems that Ford uses a "banded" system, with at least 1 component secured to the wheel hub with a steel band. Could be that there is also a component connected to the valve-stem as well, but I just don't know enough to say.



It also appears that any tire repair or rotation requires the servicing agent to verify operation of the system, and report changes to it back to Ford.



Anybody out there have any knowledge on these systems. It appears that it was implemented in 2008, but since I have 2005, I've never had any experience with it.

Ford did use the band system but have since changed to the tire stem type. My 08 F150 had the band and I know my 12 F150 has the stem type. Not exactly sure what year they switched.

My 2010 has the stem sensors. My 2007 had the bands.

Basically what I'm asking is can you get a full spare with an EB Premium with PP if you want to pay extra?

Can't order a spare with a PP, either EB or GT, or with the 20" rims. Must have something to do with summer tires. On the EB PP, it's not a brake fit issue. EB PPs have the base GT brakes, and you can order a spare on a base GT, so the spare will clear the brakes.

I'm gonna live with the goo and the pump.

3-Yr road-side assistance.

Well damn they should offer free roadside assistance then for 3 years like Hyundai does since they don't use spares either...just the run flat kits.

My dealer quote warranty stated 3yr/36,000 miles including roadside assistance.
But I like the option of being able to get out of there as fast as possible, so I am ordering the spare tire.

I am surprised at the overwhelming number who have ordered the spare when they can. I didn't order it; going with the goo and the pump.

I haven't had a flat tire in the last couple hundred thousand miles (head knocking wooden wall) so I don't feel like I am risking much trouble, and the mini-spare is as (or more) limited than the goo.

How so? If the sidewall would get slashed or punctured the goo probably won't work. A blowout and the goo probably wouldn't work.

A spare is ALWAYS more versatile than goo. Sure you might have to swap another wheel to a different position but it is guaranteed to work. (If you have it inflated.)

goo also won't fix a split valve stem, I had one of those a few yrs ago.

Thanks for listing those other 2 reasons guys. There really isn't a replacement for a spare other than a spare FULL size tire.

I finally decided to add the spare to my order. I don't really care about the weight (don't race) and the peace of mind (I can change a tire) is worth it to me. After talking to my local tire dealer, he told me how much they hate to see tires come in with the goo; he says that it really is a mess to deal with. At least everyone has the option on this and can decide for themselves what they wish to do.

19-20 inches won't fit tire well.

When my dealer had an EB for a day, I purposely had him show me the tire well. The car had 18 inchers. The 18" spare tire was in the well under the trunk floor...very tight fit. The factory rep stated that there was just no more room for a larger tire.

Was that an 18 inch temp or an 18 full size?

Ive ordered EB + PP so spare wheel isnt an option for me. Im getting 18" Winter Tires + Rims. Will keep one winter tire in the trunk as my spare during the Summer and vice versa in the Winter. Although the Summer tire is 19" will not fit in the wheel well so will have to lay it flat on the trunk floor.
