Take a piece of wire - a chunk of coat hanger or electric wire - and bend it into a j-hook that you can fit into the hole and dip the distance below the hole that the oil's sitting. I do that for refilling the diff where you're aiming for 9mm below the bottom of the hole.

I’ll give it a try. But it’s irrlevant isn’t it? Still gotta be filled to the hole.

And that’s a great tip for the axle...I was unaware of that number. Thought you wanted it up to the hole as well?? Or is it a tolerance; 0-9mm?

OK...last silly question on this topic, I promise. With three quarts in the tranny, obviously it’s not under full nor unsafe to drive. Drove it to work and back, let it sit in the garage for about 30 min, then pulled the fill plug. With car level, it is now just slowly trickling out the fill hole, indicating the fluid level is right there.

Same with the axle check. Started at ~5mm below the fill hole. Pulled the plug after full drive and it is also just slowly trickling out.

Obviously being warm makes a small difference. Do you guys check/fill warm or full cold?

I think you're over thinking this a bit. I just check and fill it as it's convenient for me, which means it will be cold. As long as it's the right fluid and the level is close you will be good. The lubrication is from splashing and when you are driving on a non-level surface, or accelerating or decelerating things move around. The rear diff and transmission are designed to have the fluids (hence their levels) move around.

One of Amsoil ‘s ATFs meets the Mercon LV. It’s the ATL one. But yes, an ATF fluid is the correct fluid for the tranny. What do you mean by “what gives with the gear oil”? The axle takes a traditional gear oil. Book calls for 75W85, but that’s hard to come by. 75W90 it is.

I used the Amsoil ATL and the Severe Gear 75W90.

The opmustang link was for their transmission oil kit which they were using BG products gear oil in our transmissions which are supposed to use ATF.

No problem. I emailed op mustang last night too and got back a good response. Here it is.

Good Morning Kevin,

Tremec used to qualify the transmissions on a Manual Transmission oil (GM Syncromesh). Since they have become an OEM supplier they qualify all the transmissions on ATF for cost and efficiency. ATF is a poor choice of oil in a transmission with gears because it offers minimal shear protection..

Syncro Shift is designed to replace ATF's and many other fluids used in modern transmissions. We have attached the BG Spec sheet on BG Syncro Shift II. Customers have been using it in the GT350 since the car was released. Typically it will it operate cooler for longer track sessions and also helps remove gear nibble.

The old Borg Warner T5 manual transmission from the 90's was built to use ATF, and when Tremec bought the manual trans division from Borg Warner, they kept on using ATF as the lube fill for Tremec transmissions. That's the origin of the "ATF in a manual" story. That doesn't mean that manual trans fluids don't work in Tremec transmissions, it just means that you can use an ATF (that's generally a lot cheaper than an MTF) and your transmission will work properly.

From looking at the BG data sheet, it looks like an MTF that's intended to go in gearboxes spec'd for ATF's. Royal Purple Synchromax is the same - an MTF for ATF gearboxes.
