Noob question: is it bad for anything to shift through the gears while the car is off? Just practice rowing through them?

Whatever you do don't do what I did and speed shift then go to jump into 3rd and grind the hell out of it at 6500RPM. Definitely pratice before you start hitting high RPM's so you don't damage anything.

Also, don't shift from 3rd to 6th. I did that one time during a race. Talk about embarrassing.

Its just practice and the correct hand movements so you orbit your hand around the shifter correct. You want to be pushing the stick into gear, rather than pulling. It was the first thing drilled into my head by my driving instructor nearly a decade ago and its stuck with me ever since.

Also, never get a Pistol grip. Ball shifter all day every day.

I'll record a quick video when I get home from work to show you what I mean. :)

Never pull the shifter side to side when going between 3rd and 4th, or 4th and 3rd. Let the centering springs center the shifter into the 3-4 gate and push the shifter with no side force. If you use side force while in the 3-4 gate you will most likely go into the next gate over (1-2 or 5-6 gate). That's how guys lose a race or blow-up their transmissions! :headbonk:

I have only ridden one time with a guy who could REALLY bang the gears. Scared the heck out of me. He was power shifting, and his clutch motion was not really in-and-out. It was in-and-slip-off-the-pedal so the clutch released enough to allow the shift and then the pedal popped all the way out. It made a big noise, but man, was it fast. Not sure it was all that good for the old T-5 in my car . . .

with the MT-82, you don't want to try to force the stick into the next gear. Use the centering spring when shifting from 2-3. with an open palm push the stick straight up, because of the centering spring it will put you into 3rd automatically. The smoother and more relaxed you are the faster the shifts will be.

OKAY SO. I got home last night then realised "Oh crap, I forgot I sold my computer and my new one doesn't arrive until tomorrow afternoon!" So much for making that video last night.

But I'm at work again on my company desktop, so here's a GIF of how I shift in my car. Obviously its Right Hand Drive so just swap it for the other hand. Shift pattern is identical to the Mustang.

Code:
R 1 3 5
  2 4 6

As silver50 stated, use the centring spring to get it into 3rd from 2nd (and 4th from 5th), and use your palm for (almost) everything. You can keep it fast, but use a pushing motion always and orbit your hand properly around the shifter.

When going from 1st into 2nd, for example, you push your palm toward the outside of the shift gate on the side of the stick whilst simultaneously pushing down with your fingers. What a lot of people do is grip the very top of the stick like an old-school arcade joystick (similar to what I do in that image when going from 3rd to 4th) whilst pulling the stick to the left and also pulling down. Its uncomfortable and you're prone to having it leap into 4th if you're not precise.

Gentle pushing motions. Always use a ball shifter (pistol grip is the devil). Learn to orbit your hand properly.

Also, yes, you can shift randomly with the engine off and the clutch depressed for practice, it wont damage anything. :D

EDIT: Just realise my smart watch acts as a sort of guide when my hand rotates! haha :D
