I agree it's probably overkill. Especially since mine is a daily driver. But when the Whipple install is done, that is my cheapest/quickest time to go ahead and throwin the OPG's and sprocket. Right now I have zero ambition to go smaller puller and push the limits of the Whipple. But justtt in case that ever changes, I will have the safety items in place. One of those.. don't "need" it, until you wish you had it... type deals
Right if your already paying a "GOOD AND TRUSTED" mechanic to do your SC instal and he is in there' then by all means why not pay the extra $$ for peace of mind.

My timing gear broke at 3000 RPM under full throttle. It is not rpm or rev limiter specific. I agree it may never happen but I have a good example on my desk.

$600 now or $4000 later + $600.
Just because it broke at 3,000 rpm doesn't mean the chain wasn't stretched due to high rpm operation over time which lead to play which broke the timing sprocket. What did your old car rev to?

What power adder were you running when it broke?

Agreed. And I hear he is very "good" therefore I "trust" him lol If i was already super charged, I would not pay to do the whole tear down again now to install the OPG and sprocket on their own.

he had the tvs2300 but he didn't mention it was roush or vmp so I'm guessing vmp with a redline of over 7k. I don't think power breaks them, I think abnormal shock such as chain slack causes it and the higher you rev the more stress on the timing components. If it was a power thing roush would have broken it. They've got tons of pulls and R&D at 750 rwhp on the tvs2300 on a 15', but they don't rev it past stock (7k).

I was just like everybody else here saying it wont happen to me. I have had 4 coyotes all with blowers or turbo and never broke the timing gear before. I have always put in Billet OPG and slid the old timing gear right back on. Same on the 15 and then bam a smack in the teeth!

I can tell you the 15 timing gear is not as robust as the 11-14 after holding them both. I know several people get away with stock but why put on a blower and worry every time you hit it if the timing gear will hold. You take away the enjoyment of the power. I know the added expense sucks but it is money well spent.

Is that one of the reasons you sold the car? Lost the faith? Or did that happen to your 2016?

Stick cars are very hard on the IRS. I broke everything under the sun even with good parts bolted on. Auto is much easier on the drive train.

I've asked a few times now but you keep avoiding the question. Don't do it for me, do it for science. What was the rev limiter set to in the tune file on your old car before it broke.

I had a VMP tvs. The car only had 2000 miles and 10 passes on it when the gear broke.

R&D info is never 100% public for obvious reasons. The best way to find the weakest link is this forum.

Has anyone broken the gear n/a? Most cars I've seen with this issue were forced induction.
My car was pulled to 7500 on the dyno while data logging and bunch of track runs with no issues (so far). I did of course buy the mmr/tss in preparation for boost. It would really suck to break one.

I am not avoiding anything. 7500 shift points. With so little miles and very few passes I don't think that played much of a factor. I shift at 7700 in my 16 and know everything will hold with no issues.

Do you have the timing gear in your 16?

The added expense does suck especially since the driveline and irs upgrades were 6k alone. But the gears are for sure well worth it.

Parts breakage sucks,it sucks even worse when you cheaped out

As a drag racer for 25+ years I have broke a lot of parts even when I spent
extra to had the best made.......and that broke too. Thats racing but at least
you know you did all you could...

I bought the whipple, oil pump gear and sprocket all at the same time
sadly fords stock piece is junk..

Yep I have both opg and timing gear. I recently made over 800 with the Whipple!! Just waiting on the track to open.
