yeah, I had one of those Cosworth Vegas, what a pile of garbage.Aluminum engine blocks without sleeves have been a disaster just about everywhere...ask GM who tried it on the Vega and BMW who had the imfamous nicasil lining in their V8's in the early 1990's.
There's way more than 35 who've voted in the poll already. Thing is, not every 2018 with this rattle or engine issue was sold to a M6G member who happened to vote in the poll. The poll is a small cross section of 2018 owners, but I believe it has some validity.10% of them show up here which is only 35.
I have been to some of the truck forums. The F-150's with 5.0 engines are not immune and report the tick issue too.How are these engines faring in the F-150? Does the F-150 get the DI/linerless version of the Coyote?
I am not pretending to have the exact numbers as I stated in my post. The process of thought was What I was trying to illustrate. I am unsure of g2g sales percentages and how many of those sales make it to this forum. But you can see, the numbers in the pole are significant because each stage of selection is another fraction of reduction. There's way more than 35 who've voted in the poll already. I have the bbq tick and the rattle, at the time of the poll it i posted yes did not take it to the dealer yet. I have, they documented it. said the tick is the normal coyote tick thats been around since gen 1 coyotes, the rattle is not "norma'" but didnt look into it further waiting for ford to figure out the cause and issue. It documented, i came home put on my MGW, headers, xpipe and tune.. like others have said, they took out 8lbs of cylinder liners, it may be "common" to hear the rattle, many f150's have it. others around here do also. I have a 60k warranty so im not worried ill drive it till it goes because worrying about it isnt going to fix it nor let me enjoy it. If it goes it goes, ill have a new car in 3-4 years and this will still only have 20-30k miles since its not a DD.
I've seen this guys videos. He has the same idle tick that everyone has but he's convinced it's a major issue. Why do you think the second engine did it as well? All 2018+ 5.0s have the unsteady idle tick. His 3rd engine will do it too.
Nothing to see here imo.
I'm not saying the type of coating is the issue but rather the different rates of expansion between a cast aluminum block with no cast iron liner and a low expansion Hyper piston. they absolutely expand at different rates and amounts and clearances do change.https://jalopnik.com/5467038/the-ford-engine-technology-good-enough-for-the-nissan-gt-r liners have been around and that's not whats causing the noise, but keep trying to create problems that don't exsist
Update:Dunno if this helps avoid excess piston float on the rings (sloppy slap piston rocking in bore).
My breakin:
Keep engine between 3-5 rpm during first 200 miles up to 2/3 throttle.
3-6 rpm occasional full throttle 200-400
4-7 rpm occasional full throttle 400-500
3-7.5 rpm 500+ Increasing to 4+ sec WOT
600+ miles: repeated 4+ sec WOT on track to CHT 225.
Prolly do compression test soon.
Then maybe wait till 800 to go sustained track use till CHT 245. Figure if ring gap too low, itll blow a ring land at that point.
Then compression test after track weekends from there on.
