Ford wouldn't have approved every one of these 3 engine replacements in this guy's car if there wasn't a valid reason. Ford is known to be tough on approving major warranty work. They aren't going to throw a new engine in just because an engine is making what they would consider "normal" ticking/rattling noises. They know something isn't normal on the engines they warranty. Ford isn't into losing money over invalid warranty work.[
..they have issues but like at my company the 6k they are probably invest in a longblock install is 45 seconds of the daily profit ….time is money..and they are potentially keeping a customer, plus they need to have a certain amount of trust in their techs...all this being said, i'm not sure why i'm defending them , when they should be defending themselves i'm not an engineer but my closest friend is head of engine development for a different manufacturer.. you all need to quit worrying except for the random bad engine...the rattle is normal

Agree. Ford is doing a short block swap on my 15. I'm sure they aren't just doing it for shitz and giggles. Maybe the metal shavings in my oil pan convinced them there was a problem with my engine. Did the barbeque tick cause this? Unknown at this point. Glad Ford is fixing the problem.

I am an engineer and I do work in the industry. Every engine replacement shows up on a warranty claims report. Multiple claims end up being flagged, and usually sets off an 8D investigation. Ford isn’t defending themselves because either they don’t know what is the root cause, or they know the engine failures/replacements aren’t related to the rattle. In either case, they will likely release a TSB when they have completed the 8D. I assure you, every engine replacement hurts their bottom line. Hell, they throw a sh1t fit when there are 10 injector related warranty claims.

Why can’t we have some middle ground in here? Ignoring an unknown noise in the engine when you can’t point out the origin is just as moronic as thinking your engine will automatically explode from that unknown noise. We should be concerned, but not panic.

You guys are going to scare yourself into a miserable mindset and all end up with a Honda Civic then brag about your old Mustang on the Vtec forums. Smh
I wear tin foil on my head every time I get in my car and drive. I think it is working so far!

Lets not complicate things with expert input. After all you are only an engineer in the automotive industry and understand corporate protocols. Facts are much too complicated. Innuendo makes for a more colorful conversation. :like:

I really wish Growler was right. I think the s550 platform is fantastic. They've just made some sort of oversight that has a high liability.

Anyways, I bore scoped my own car and found the discoloration in cylinders 7 & 8 that go from the bottom to near the top of the sleeves from what I can tell. I also checked cylinder 2 to see what a normal cylinder looked like, and there was no discoloration. Unfortunately, this type of discoloration can only be caused by physical contact.

Maybe I should too. In 27,000 miles. Warranty work > Evap coil replacement > APIM module replacement > Drive shaft replacement > In the process of a short block replacement. Maybe I'm not holding my jaw right when I drive it.

Oof. Not good. Are you taking it in to have the dealer verify?

I have taken in previously but they just denied there was an issue. I submitted the info to ford through the CSR rep. I was waiting to see what they say.
