I had my 170 installed two days ago and it's a very noticeable difference. With the stocker I ran 200-215 most days under normal load. Now I am getting 185-190 with the same driving.

Does it give me more power? Who the hell knows, or even cares...it would be negligible. I only did it cause I got a Lund tune and didn't want my fans on all the time lol.

I just read through 11 pages of this horseshittery (along with SOME good info), and I still have yet to see/know if I need to/should have my tune changed if I was to install the 170. Only mods I have is a k&N drop in, and a Airaid CAI tube and the car is tuned with HPT. IF I need to have the tune changed, I can just go into my current tune with HPT and make a change right? What exactly needs to be changed in the tune?

you can just make the fans come on stronger at lower coolant temps. it's not that big of a deal.

This post just shows your "lack of information" regarding this topic. Better go back to the Cosmetics section and ask about which microfiber towel is best.

Guess, what genius, I live in Texas...It's hot. I lived in Maryland for 2.5 years and it's horrible there, I can understand why you are so upset....let's pinpoint the real issue here. You are in MD. Now I feel bad. How can I help?
MD does indeed have many people like this lol. I'm starting to think it's the whole NE starting in DC though.

Lot's of good info in here, glad I took the time to sift through the other nonsense as I've been debating this lately.

Is there any downside to running the 170* thermostat in a stock or mildly modified (tune, CAI, etc.) car?

that's what I am doing....I am running and thermostat AND one step colder plugs in mine and all I have is a GT350 intake manifold. stock exhaust, etc.

I also thought about running one heat range colder plugs to.. did you need to change your tune for the plug and the 170 t-stat though? I planned on running E85 as well but didn't know how the colder plugs and corn would work together NA.. Ive just always run colder plugs on FI or nitrous set ups.

i changed my tune on the way home from the dealer with 5 miles on the car, lol....

E85 likes colder plugs with non-projected tips to help fend off pre-ignition. E85 has more resistance to detonation but there is also more fuel in the cylinder and a hot spot like a glowing plug will light all that fuel off at bottom dead center and make it look like you dropped a grenade on your piston.

now will that happen on a relatively mild setup? i doubt it.

Right but would a tune need to change because of the 1 heat range cooler plug? I assume it would need to change for the gain in performance/power (if any).
As far as colder plugs and the 170 t-stat, I am looking more to make the motor run more efficiently as I would think the power gains would be minimal at best if any. BUT will it run more efficiently/have more power with those swapped out without changing the tune? I wouldn't think so??

I doubt you will notice a difference. Don't need to change the tune but you can. It's all in the name of getting a few more degrees of spark lead.

About to install the thermostat next week (170).

Wanted to ask you guys if the fans should be running as much as they are now. Mine seem to be on pretty much all the time. Put the Lund tune and JLT intake in last week.

Didn't want to make a new thread just for this.

they should run less with the thermostat installed.

My fans were on a lot with my Lund tune and Steeda intake, it was stirring up a lot of heat and causing IATs to get pretty high. After I put my Reisch in the fans are on less now because the engine temps are staying under 200 and closer to 190, therefore keeping my IATs closer to how they were stock which was within 10 degrees of ambient. That's my experience for whatever it's worth.
