When I did my dyno runs they were with the hood down. I didn't record the intake or cylinder head temps but I definitely picked up power. Keep in mind that Steeda did this same test with other brand's products which use an open element filter and claimed to pick up power over them as well.

I have a test design that will require about 40 pulls on a dyno however I don't want to waste that much time and money just to prove what's already been proven. If I did perform the test I'd cut the runs in half or possibly 60% which will hurt the statistical power but should still show reliable results.

Plus this is all predicated on having a tune vs. no tune on stock and aftermarket. I could just do no-tune and cut the runs by 50% right off the bat and still have a high statistical power.

ok, i missed your reference is all. Sorry about that. i really dont think the IAT will be much more if any more than driving 65 mph. The fans my dyno guy uses feels like they are blowing at 60 mph.. lol like i said i will test this when i go to the dyno in a week or so. i have even took black rtv and sealed up where the snorkel connects to the steeda box trying to get my IAT's down. didnt do much. still 10 to 15 above ambient when driving even at 70 mph.
Not sure how much difference it makes but unless it's in a wind tunnel a fan cannot produce the same mass of air as open world driving does. With the car moving through the air it creates a high-pressure layer on the front of the car which changes the effects of a ram-air style system vs. sitting still. The intake temps seem to vary quite a bit and I've yet to nail down why that is. Some days I'm 5-7 above ambient, other's I'm 10-12. That means that something other than the intake is causing the varying temps such as driving conditions, humidity, or other factors.

However, since the dyno is great for showing changes, it's just noise and not something to consider when comparing one product to another. As long as you maintain the variables such as the same tires (consistent rolling resistance), same tank of gas, same indicated temps, the results will be very reliable baring any malfunctions or randomized events.

i have no doubt that they did. i believe Steeds dyno results. And i agree that there intake makes more power over any other open air intake system and certainly more than any closed box intake.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone, just trying to tell you what makes sense to me. Even some big names in tuning will tell you this about open element filters on the dyno. Two different ones told me this and that's what got me thinking about it.

The intake breaths better wen totally open to air than when you close the hood and crate some what of a box. When i go to the Dyno in a week or two i will test this and write the info down. i wouldn't think the IAT would change much. mine are 10 to 15 above ambient when driving anyway.
Yes ...interesting. Post back afterwards. Curious about this because I've seen other threads discussing hood down/hood up testing and don't remember which way won out in general consensus.

Regardless of that, I will say I am enjoying the Steeda CAI without insert using SCT 91 octane tune.
I feel quite a difference compared to stock. This will probably be my only engine mod so I am happy I settled on this.

Did you by chance drill out more holes in your grill? I drilled mine out for more air.

Around here right now it's about 55 degrees in the afternoon and I consistently get 5 to 10 degrees above ambient ...averaging about 6 to 7 usually.

I drilled out more holes when I still had stock box and was getting same result with it too. I think drilling out the holes helped a little.

Yes I drilled them all out

This is getting intense! Steeda proved that their intake provides more hp and torque compared to some other intakes including the factory one. For hood open or closed discussion, you really need to spend some serious dollars to rent a real wind tunnel with an ambient air simulators to record an accurate hood down dyno! Anyone willing to donate some cash? Be my guest!

Knight5.0 I also sealed up around the velocity stack to the box. I had big gap at the top and bottom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk[/QUOTE said:
There is also a very large gap in the front and drivers side that would help very much to close. Doing a different approach for sealing to hood, finally got the right distance to get the CIA to seal lightly against the hood the last pic the grease just touches the hood. I dabbed some along the seal, now I have to make the insert to raise it. This time of the year not much time but will get it done soon I hope.

Could make some money selling this when its done. Looks promising

Stang Racer I'm very interested in what your final mod to get the CAI to seal better against the underside of the hood....from looking at your pictures looks like it will be a DIY'er. Keep us posted!

Taking the car in for a base line Dyno on January 8th! Dynojet, 5th gear, 3 pulls! Car is a DD and will have little bit over 11000 miles on it. No tune, steeda intake, borla touring with resonator, jms pedal max, royal purple synchromax trans fluid, steeda wheel hop eliminator bushing supports, been fed 93 octane since September 2014!

If the car puts down over 400 whp i will personally send David from Steeda a classy wine from the house lol

Keep in mind your dyno will read differently than others. Mine was on a dynocomp and they read quite a bit lower than Dynojet and others.

Exactly, thats why i m hoping for a 400 whp :D If i am not mistaken, the Steeda dyno was also on a dynojet. The weather here is also going to be cold enough, maybe around 20 to 30 degrees, but i don't know the dyno shop conditions! They will provide me the graphs and the conditions as well!

Speaking of, did you ever post up your before and after dyno sheets? I know you said that Steeda didn't fudge their numbers and you saw gains, I know yours wasn't same day back to back but it would be good to see something other then the manufacturers findings. I'm sure many other people following this thread would be interested as well, thanks
