so a light coat inside the boot is plenty to seal out air and moisture.
I don't think it's about sealing. It makes the boot easier to remove. Especially when the boot is near exhaust manifolds and/or headers. Hemi-style plug locations really doesn't need any IMO.

You’ve never pulled off a COP and seen a plug tip that looked like it came off the generator on the titanic lol. It was especially bad on the ford 3v trucks where there was no wheel well or underbody shield So the engine got soaked.

everything was especially bad on the ford 3v .
My truck ran 200,000 miles on the original engine, trans, and rear end. Needed brakes 3 times and sway bar end links and that was it. It was a great truck I got for a steal because of the 3v fear.
