With lowering springs or gt350r springs this is sufficient.

OSHA hates this one trick.
This is awesome. If I didn't switch to coilover springs, would definitely use it next time as most spring compressors don't fit very well on front springs.

what velocity would the clamp fly off at if it slipped. just give me a rough estimate.
with the springs I mentioned, you are only taking about 1/2 inch off the free length. You will probably live as each clamp has about 75 lb of force on them, not hundreds of lbs.

Ended up trying it both ways. Used a version of the two-piece spring compressor on first side that I purchased off of Amazon for about $45. It had a brace that goes between both pieces, and it worked very well. I installed the new BMR spring by bolting the upper mount back in place and then pushing everything back up and into place with the floor jack method in the video.
So I decided to remove the factory spring on the opposite side with the floor jack releasing the pressure and it worked also. On mine the factory spring pressure just did release (tie rod still attached) and I was able to get it out safely. The second method was so much quicker, and since the Amazon kit looked as if it were used before, I may just return it.
On a side note, I have compressed and removed front springs on a couple 60's mustangs which requires a spring compressor up the middle of the spring. I had a lot more anxiety on the old ones than I did on the S550.

Timely thread, I'm also trying to diagnose a suspension noise from the right front also. Was looking into top mounts, and the spring removal procedure. I've seen the video linked where Steeda remove the spring without compressors, but then they specify use of the spring compressor putting it back together.
@C-WOODS-70 do you have a link to the ones you used? Good to have recommendations from someone who's used the tools to do the job successfully.

I've reinstalled them the same way they come out. It can be a little tricky to line the strut shaft back up through the strut mount but it's not to bad.

This is the one I used. Search Amazon and you will find it. There are several different brands, but they all look exactly the same. I used a 1/2' drive socket and ratchet, no impact, to keep things nice and smooth as I compressed.
FWIW I don't plan on ever using it again as the other method was easier and quicker.

Ive been doing the floor jack method since i replaced strut mounts on my 2000 Grand Prix GTP. Around 20 years. Once anyone does it that way i would be shocked if they went back to the other way. I have done it on many vehicle types and havent found one to be unsafe yet. Only difficult part is getting the strut shaft lined back up as mentioned. But we are talking 1-2 minutes difficult.

my brother is a nissan master mechanic, had 2 fingers broken when the professional wall mounted spring compressor arm shattered, doesn't matter what method/tool you use, this is a dangerous procedure.

Thankyou for the response. So, jack and careful maneuver of the strut it is, then?
