Hi - new to the board but wondered if others had issues with the rear suspension shock absorber breaking through the mounting. I’ve had my 2016 V8 convertible since new across here in the UK & covered just 23k miles but 2 weeks ago loud banging noise for the rear passenger side - took it to the dealer who wouldn’t;t let me drive it out as the shocker had come through the mounting & through the fuel filler pipe - it’s an RHD model. Ended up with a bill for equivalent of US$1000 but Ford UK not interested even with a low mileage. Never had suspension issues on any of my cars over the past 50yrs & wondered if this was an issue with the model.

If the upper strut mount failed thats not super common, but the good news is, but it is “the right way” for it to fail if you hit a bad pothole or bump.

you want the mount to fail, and not rip out the attachment point on the body.

so don’t worry you’re unlikely to see that type of failure again

Thanks for your thoughts - I just wondered how common it was as I saw a similar failure reported on another website. Repair was cheaper than I expected but not conscious of hitting a pothole recently although UK roads are appalling. Hopefully the 2024 model will be an improvement if I’m ever able to order one - Ford UK not interested at the moment.

Sorry - none available from the dealer - fairly straightforward repair once the parts arrived,

It's not a new issue and seems to be more of a concern with the 2015-2017 S550's. Read through this thread:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/rear-shock-mount-repair.186452/

Also although you're rightfully upset that Ford won't cover the repair cost, facts are that a 2016 S550 is well past the 3/36 New Car Bumper to Bumper Warranty, which is where that type failure would have been covered.

The only other ways that failure would be covered:
- Extended Ford or aftermarket Warranty that would have specific coverage for suspension, suspension components or suspension/frame structure.

- NHTSA Recall due to the issue being an owner and public safety concern.

There is no NHTSA recall regarding the rear shock mount failures. If enough people start reporting it, maybe a recall would be issued and the repair would be mandatory per that recall.

Thanks for the info - I didn‘t really expect Ford UK to do anything but when i sent them an email this morning I got a ‘cut and paste’ email back within 30mins telling me they’d reviewed and consider matters & wouldn’t assist - they really must have considered & review within 30mins!

I found this report on another website which got me thinking it might be an issue so thought I would ask around. I mentioned to Ford that I was aware of ‘aftermarket’ stronger mountings being avaialble 7 that there must be a reason for that.

It's a $50 part you could replace in 30 minutes.

If the mount ripped out like in the above link, yes that is a problem. If the center of the mount broke, it is designed to do that. This is to stop the sheet metal from ripping as in the above link.

Yes it is common especially with aftermarket shocks.

Hi - seems to have been a relatively easy/quick repair once the parts arrived - l had the other rear mounting replaced at the same time so try to avoid the issue again. Part certainly not US$50 across here and the fuel filler pipe was nearly US$400!

Ford should have shaped the sheetmetal like they did on the Maverick and you wouldn't need (as much) of a sacrificial element. But alas it must have been "give structural design to the intern day" at Ford HQ.

sorry to hear about the damage on the car, did you / have you hit any large pothole (repeatedly it'd have to be) to cause such damage? I was looking at maybe changing the suspension on my 17plate as it's near 40k miles on it and it was always more GT than sporty but this slightly worries me.
You got some damned fine roads up there too, once away from the A9!

No - I haven’t hit any large potholes regularly - my driving tends to be local so I’m fairly aware of where to potholes are & make a point of reporting them to the local authorities so they‘re duty bound to repair them within 7 days otherwise they become liable for any damage caused to cars.

The scenes roads here are great once you get away from the dreaded A9 - the North Coast 500 should be on everyone’s to do list but just be aware of the potholes and the sheep!
