Just thinking out loud here but is there any aero benefit from removing the lower valance from the rear bumper? Seems like it might be acting like a parachute on the car. Would removing it help air escape more efficiently?

Aesthetics aside of course

It will lessen drag, yes, but you'll also lose some amount of rear aero grip. The GT350 and GT500 both have pretty functional rear aero packages in the form of the rear diffuser and an underbody valence panel. If you're concerned about drag from the rear valence, you might look at incorporating an underbody valence.

Correct, the 350 and 500 have a panel but the regular GTs don't have anything there. I thought maybe this would be free aero gain that could be done

I am with you. Just looks like a parachute under there!

I was considering one of these as it seems to have some real aero value and not just cosmetic. Also thinking it could help protect a diff cooler.

Here is a thread for one they custom made for GT350's. I don't have a GT350, but it gives you a real good idea of the size, underside coverage and members thoughts:

I did this upgrade. Definitely saw in instant increase in fuel efficiency so the drag reduction works. The rear bumper does act like a parachute, so not wrong there!

I recently saw a video of a European mustang at Monza (HPDE type event) and the car had the rear lower valance removed or at least cut away. That's what gave me the idea.

I know the Versus diffuser would definitely generate some downforce but I was curious if I could take a Dremel to my lower valance for free and potentially get rid of some drag

Can you share a picture of your's?......Edit, oh you mean the diffuser, not removing the valance right?

@Bluemustang how far forward does the diffuser go? If you had a diff cooler mounted right behind the diff, would the cooler be covered by the diffuser? Essentially cutting off air supply?

It protrudes about an inch or two past the rear body panel. Just behind where the muffler ends. Basically just enough that it extends past where the parachute starts. See attached pics.

It's nice. I personally like the effect, appearance-wise, even though I did it in order to reduce drag. In person it's subtle but adds a meaningful effect to the rear end.

Look at the people who do real testing. They all remove bodywork from behind the rear tires and control the underbody airflow until it's completely behind the car. Rules make them keep the bodywork above the rear axle centerline.

Not that I have a diff cooler, but would removing the rear lower valance negatively affect a diff cooler effectiveness? I'm pretty certain the answer would be no but wanted to ask before I start cutting away. (Either gt350 style diff cooler or FTB style)
