Exactly thats why we can't go all theoratical at some point. Cheers.
I think I know where your confusion is coming from. Youre talking about the average MPG dropping when sitting at idle. The average MPG is more or less affected from the instantaneous MPG reading. It essentially gets its average from the instantaneous MPG reading over time (last 30min). If you reset the average it will more or less reflect the instantaneous MPG for a short period of time until it establishes a new average. So if you fill up, reset the avg and leave the gas station and drive a short distance then sit at a light, yes the avg will drop significantly because it needs to establish a new baseline. Now if you reset and hop on the highway for a good 10min or so and then sit at a light it shouldnt drop nearly as much. It all depends how many miles you have on that tank of gas. I hope that helps

I think we can all agree though, that no matter what version you choose, ALL of the Mustangs get darn good gas mileage and are all quick too! :ford:

this tank of gas, so far, my GT is now at 22.6 MPG average, i filled up on Monday on my way to work. I am hereby impressed. no, there has not been a whole lot of spirited driving involved from home to work which is 22 miles each way. There has been some spirited accelerations from stop lights, absolutely... which is why this impresses me even more!!

If we are talking about average mpg reading, then it should not change (unless the car sits at idle for long long hours).
As yet another of what seems to be countless Engineers here, that really depends on the total data set.

After a really, really long time of driving it should not change significantly no matter what you do because the average dominates the immediate data. In my wife's Fusion it takes days of driving to get it to change more than a tenth of a MPG since the average is over 30k miles and that is a huge amount of historical data to overcome. But if you reset it and have been averaging for 5 or 10 minutes, it will have a very dramatic impact on the mileage to sit still or slow-go it. So again it depends on which of the two we are talking about. Since these cars are all very new, and the 5.0 is a thirsty engine no matter the RPM relative to less potent engines, it will move the needle until a significant baseline of data has been established.

Not looking to bash anyone here, speaking purely to the facts...

Took a test drive yesterday, GT Premium with standard Auto transmission. Started out low (~10MPG) as we were in mostly stopped stop and go, but once on the freeway including some uphills it averaged >27MPG on the freeway portion (60-65MPG) and 22MPG overall with again some spirited acceleration in there. That is better than my current 20yo, 170HP 24V 2.5L Mercury Mystique and with a LOT more fun factor for sure!!!

I am very impressed and cannot wait to order and get my 5.0 Convertible!

The instantaneous reading is a nice feature, I like it a lot. Even if it is a little bit of an unsafe distraction. Although whether it be instantaneous or avg mpg, they're both gonna decrease at idle
They are, and to an exponential level in those stupid Hybrids. In my Wife's Fusion Hybrid, I found myself watching the stupid gauges to see how light you have to have the gas pedal to keep in battery, it is like an annoying video came. After a little while just had to say f* it, too dangerous to keep watching the stupid gauges, and drive like normal.

Glad to be getting a GT where I will really only be measuring Smiles per Mile (corny I admit...:))

Yes,of course. By long (in my last post), I meant long enough. The average mpg will change if the car sits at idle for a long enough time.

The main purpose of my last post was to point out that Sasuketr might be talking about average mpg instead of instantaneous mpg.

I just want to point out that some cars allow you to change the MPG to liters per hour or gallons per hour. VW's have several options. Whether it is AVG or instant, if the engine is running the numbers will change for better or worse. The only time it won't change is when it is off. Idling you are using fuel, not much but it will cause the AVG and the Distance to Empty meter to go down as well. With some cars, like my VW if I remember correctly. The distance to empty won't change after idling for a while until you start moving, but once you start moving it will take it a little bit to start reading an accurate remaining distance. The computer needs time to adjust the calculation.

I hope this helps some, I know I'm repeating a bit of what other members have said.

Was not actually replying to you in any of mine, obviously long would be a ratio of how long it was idling vs. how long it was averaging before idling :)
