I think I know where your confusion is coming from. Youre talking about the average MPG dropping when sitting at idle. The average MPG is more or less affected from the instantaneous MPG reading. It essentially gets its average from the instantaneous MPG reading over time (last 30min). If you reset the average it will more or less reflect the instantaneous MPG for a short period of time until it establishes a new average. So if you fill up, reset the avg and leave the gas station and drive a short distance then sit at a light, yes the avg will drop significantly because it needs to establish a new baseline. Now if you reset and hop on the highway for a good 10min or so and then sit at a light it shouldnt drop nearly as much. It all depends how many miles you have on that tank of gas.
