They are replacing the entire back portion. Hence the 500 dollar cost. Winter wheels didn't come with this, and I didn't see them on my PP wheels

So, I went to Ford today to see if they could repair my lug nut heads that are completely ripped off. Ford was stomped and they said they would call me.

Eventually they did and stated that when we put the winter wheels on, we removed the plastic pieces and never put them back on. So, the cost is going to be $497 dollars to repair everything (labor included).

1. When we did the winter wheels, no plastic rings were included nor were on my car.
2. Is this a rip off? It feels like it.
3. Who do I talk to if it is!?

Thoughts?
This is not a Ford defect unless this Ford dealer did the winter tire/wheel swaps.

A lot of parts have to be removed in order to replace the wheel studs. Plus other parts may have been damaged or at least be "suspect" due to the loose wheel driving. I have no clue regarding the standard labor hours or dealer rates for this work.

Did you or whomever did winter/summer tire/wheel changes use a torque wrench to make sure the lug nuts were torqued to the Ford specified 150 lb-ft? Either too little or too much could be a contributing factor.

There are a variety of possible causes for the broken wheel studs but since you clearly are not familiar with the terms and parts involved it isn't practical to try to speculate on the internet.

After you get this fixed you might want to find someone to teach you a little more about the "wheel" mounting terms and issues.

Meanwhile consider the cost of this experience as "tuition in the school of automotive life"

Good luck.

What do you mean by "entire back portion"? As previously mentioned, lug studs are cheap and they are just pressed in. You can do it yourself. Not hard.

What parts need to be removed other than the caliper and disk (not hard)? You just rotate until the stud that needs to be removed is lined up with the gap and hit it with a hammer.

The oem PP wheels do not have "centering rings".

With Mustangs wheels are properly centered by carefully tightening the lug nuts in a "star pattern" so that the wheel seats properly on the hub and the lug nuts torque properly. "Centering rings" when used are a convenience, not a necessity . . . if the installer knows what he/she is doing.

I have swapped between aftermarket autocross wheels and oem PP wheels dozens of times in the last 3 years with no issues. The key is knowing what to look for when tightening the lug nuts.

Yes. Until I catch someone in the act, I don't have anything to go off of. Something I stated. I have/had no hard evidence, and have a report to go off of. Until I catch someone, I have to go with what I know. I don't see the problem, but your condescending tone says otherwise. Everyone is always wanting to start shit here. Jesus.

Anyways. Does anyone remember seeing these plastic pieces around their lugs? I don't.
well don't make any sense and people check you on it may be it's you that's the problem, just be sure to tell your Daddy about it.

Not according to the shop manual. The manual says to remove the hub which, of course requires other steps. I have no idea whether your way is physically possible with these cars since I've never looked or even removed the rear caliper and rotor on my 15.

Me neither, but on several other cars where I have replaced wheel lugs there is always a place (sometimes an obvious cut-out) open on the backside where you can just hammer it out.

Understood. The last time I replaced wheel studs was too many decades ago to remember how I did it. :)

Trust me kids. Wheel studs are done the same today as they are on a fox body. Very easy job. You can rig a metal plate to put over the stud and pull the wheel stud thru the hub using the lug nut. Or you could do it right and buy a wheel stud installation tool for $20 bucks. I've done it both ways.

A lot of information here. Seems like Ford Service Department is definitely screwing me over here.

They said they're going to replace the entire assembly. That's what is going to cost 500 bucks. From what I've read, and I've shown in the pictures, the heads can be simply replaced, correct? I'm not sure why that isn't being done.

Look at post #9 in this link: https://mustangforums.com/forum/2005-2014-mustangs/697009-why-do-i-keep-breaking-wheel-studs.html

And this photo

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1375/2869/3436434006_large.jpg

The tinnerman nuts have been removed from the rotor in your picture which hopefully means that whomever installed your winter wheels the first time removed them. There is absolutely no reason to install replacements.
EXACTLY!!!

What "plastic pieces"???????????????

Wheels were put on hand cranked in a star pattern. I've done this with my Dad dozens of times. No plastic rings were on the ground, nor came loose or broke off at any time.

Ford said they've taken 'pictures' to show me what they mean. I, too, took pictures of my car before hand, with the wheels removed.

If necessary, I'll call their bluff and have them pull out a brand new GT with PP. I'm not going to pay 500 for some ridiculous BS.
