Ive got an '18 Ruby Red with 5k on the odo and it is covered in rock chips. The rkads around me are not that bad in my opinion but it seems to eat every rock or something. Only driven if the sun is out and no chance of rain and also gets washed everytime I drive it. Stays parked in enclosed garage. So I would say that the chips do not indicate whether or not it is a garage queen

Well, to be honest, I have maybe four chips. But only one big one. I don't tailgate and I also have 8mm spacers front and rear and I am lowered 1.5 front and 1.1 rear. Just seasoned as a driver for a medical company.

Summer tires will throw A LOT more road debris than all seasons. Those areas were starting to get chewed up on my car with PP wheels/tires and 25mm spacers so I got some stone guards from ZL1 Addons. This helped, but I could still see more damage happening and could still hear crap getting thrown down the side of the car. Got XPEL put in the front end, rockers, and impact area in front of the rear wheel and I could still hear stuff getting thrown back by the fron tores but the damage stopped. Then I swapped to all season tires and now I never hear stuff getting thrown down the side of the car anymore.

Not sure if this is normal or not. Maybe they did a burnout on a road with some loose rocks. Believe it or not I have a major chip on my windshield caused by my tires throwing a rock somehow that hit it. I know it was the tires, because no one was around me at the time. The Pirelli's seem to be sticky enough to pick up rocks and throw them all the time. I do drive on some city streets that I can hear rocks hitting under the car. It's not much, but it always makes me drive a bit more cautious and to the center. Not sure how these city roads keep rocks on them.
That's hilarious. I was driving one day and I heard something hit the windshield and no one was around. I was like... maybe something fell down the tree but I think you're so right. I think it was a rock that the tires caught that was really small of course and hit the windshield.

Freeway driving usually creates more chips. But that does look like it was driven on dirt roads regularly.

It's not really a problem, just aesthetics.

Wow the previous owner/owners must have been driving on really stoney roads/ a lot of gravel. Also to keep in mind the paint job on these car are not the most durable.

I have xpel on the whole front, hud and front fenders. I also have a 10"-ish wide strip running over the front of the roof and also on the a-pillars.

I have also ppf marked in red. On these areas I have no chips. The PPf has done its job fortunately

Without the PPF I think it would look like a swiss cheese, the paint on these cars are not too notch at all. With that said the PPF is expensive like hell.

However at the yellow cross I have one really big one just where the ppf don't cover. Also strangely I have chips on the area marked with the yellow arrow on both sides.... I think it is the front wheels that potentially have thrown rocks!?

Thanks for all the responses.

I've been able to look at a few more used Mustangs. To summarize this thread, yes these areas are very susceptible to rock chips. However, this '16 is an extreme example. The owner had to drive very rocky roads or gravel frequently to get the damage that is on this vehicle.

I'm still negotiating with the dealer on this car. The price keeps getting better. I'm also exploring repair options with the dealer that aren't show quality or a total respray. Most dealers use these types of services on their used cars before the public even sees the cars.

Thanks again to all.

I passed on the purchase of this car. Even with the price, the paint would've bothered me.

Still searching for a '15-'17.

Thanks again everybody.

Good call my friend! If it was an easy (inexpensive fix), the dealer would have done it. That is definitely not the norm for used Mustangs. Looks like it had regular high speed drives, on a small sized gravel road (like after being tarred and chipped). :like:

Bet that cost you a pretty penny but maybe worth it for the protection! I’ve been fixing chips on my ST on the go with Dr.Color Chip, it actually works very well and I’ll be honest the little minor ones up front I never even notice unless I examine closely. I use Dr Color on the big gash ones that end up on the hood. End of the day it’s a car, shit happens too it.

That being said I’m going to put splash guards on my 19’ when I get it. Kinda wish I had them on my ST, no chips on sides but I hate all the grim that kicks up on the rear and side panels from hard accelerating.

Good call on the pass. I have 120k miles on my car and even with the dark Deep Impact Blue, I dont have as many scratches/pits as that. 99% highway miles though.

My front clip got most of the small pits/chips from road debris. I agree with others that if you use summer tires, you need some sort of protection because they fling rocks like crazy.

That guy must have had some sticky rubber, or drove on gravel roads in the boonies.

With that many paint chips in front of the rear wheel, that car had/has wheel spacers and no mud flaps.

PS - I think I see a black spacer on the photo of the rear wheel.
