Getting ready to purchase my cross country sight seeing convertible used Mustang. Question 1 : does a GT really require 90+ octane? and realistically what highway mileage would one get at 80 mph? Questin 2: Since I can't locate GT with the options I want ( 401, active exhaust, safety stuff) would I regret settling for an Ecoboost?
Thanks!
I cannot answer re the octane requirement because Australian fuel is crap, but I feed mine 98 octane petrol "just to be kind". (like giving premium dog food to my hound!) As far as the V8 vs EB is concerned, I believe there is no contest. The sound and the feel of that V8 just cannot be replicated in a 4 cyl turbo engine. It brings a smile to my face every time I push that starter button - and I'm almost 70. I LOVE driving this car (manual transmission)!!

Great forum! I expected a lot of smart aleck answers if any, but you guys are alright! Thank you for the input, I’ve found a race red GT convertible with everything I wanted for decent money. Thanks again.
Great Choice! Though I am biased...

The real reason we all get Mustangs is the signature sound, the super sexy looks and the no excuses true sports car handling combined with the crazy fast acceleration.

Seriously... If you can afford it then get a REAL Mustang.
Sound (you win), looks (a tie), handling (What? In a Mustang?? Well, some actually give the EB an edge in that department), and well, acceleration (you win, but an EB might just be less than a second behind you, and they can be stealthy, so you might not even know it)! The EB gets from 0 to felony PDQ, too. 🤣🤣🤣

And, I've yet to run into anyone IRL who said they didn't think my car was a real Mustang... I mean, maybe they thought it, who knows? Y'all can think whatever you like. We're all entitled to be wrong! 😉😂

I guess this is good as any thread for my first post and also why I signed up after reading some very uninformed opinions stated here.

But GT all the way. I've owned an 03 3.8 with an Eaton slapped on, a 12 v6, and a 16 GT. Now a 23 GT. There is literally no replacement for displacement.

I've not driven the EB but have also owned a fully modded forged and upgraded turbo WRX and STi. So I know what 4 banger turbos feel like. Granted all wheel vs rear.

Not even close. Even my 16 GT falls a bit behind my 23. These new GTs are MONSTERS. Even more so with the 10 speed auto.

Also as to the knock and octane debate ...

People really should not speak on what they don't know. A previous poster is correct cars knock all the time during normal use no matter (pump gas) the octane. You can literally hook up and datalog and watch it happen. The ECU will correct for it. Unless it gets so bad it no longer can. But that doesn't happen with a healthy engine and clean gas.

87 is PERFECTLY fine to run. Not optimal but just as safe as anything. Anyone trying to say otherwise is just trying to justify their neurotic habit of only filling 93.

You don’t need premium. Regular will be just as suitable. It will burn quicker though. You’re going to want to replace the factory exhaust with an aftermarket cat back or at least a resonator delete. The resonator makes the car sound weak and way too quiet. Also puts more stress on the engine. That V8 will be able to breathe fully without the resonator. Whatever you do though don’t buy an ecoboost.

If you're asking about MPGs, a GT isn't for you. Get the Ecoboost, especially for cross country sight seeing convertible.

It's not the 60s anymore you can have both. A GT gets pretty good highway MPG.

Depends on your (actually, the OP's) definition of "pretty good MPGs".

I've had 4 of them. Have one now. No, no they do not get good MPGs.

Good for a performance v8 outputting 400+ hp and if you don't lead foot it everywhere.
