Former Ecoboost vert owner with a lead foot avg 20 mpg using only 93 on a tune, so Ill skip the fe ? As I dont care about it at all

I will say I was fbo and was left unsatisfied, so if I had a Delorean or a Tardis, Id get that manual GT vert that was 90% what I wanted.

Unless you’re not into modding or a speed demon, Id get a GT, and also, my friend in SoCar recommends 93 after I told him to try it

MPG on the highway can vary based on how the car is outfitted as well, but unless you are driving TONS of miles, the cost of gas is pretty low compared to what you will pay for a car. The Mustang will get better fuel economy than most SUVs and pickups, but worse than most cars. I used to get about 19 mpg mixed city/highway in my 2015 base GT. The GT350 got about 17. The GT I own now with the swing and Gurney flap gets about 18. I'm not sure whether a convertible will be worse or better, but I rarely drive 80 around here. I'd get pulled over for speeding. Economy starts to go down really fast when you eclipse 70 mph, so if economy is important to you, driving more slowly will help.

I'm also not sure about top down vs. top up. I wouldn't be surprised if top down is 1-2 mpg difference in mixed driving.

I would buy the GT because the Mustang is a big car built for the 5 liter. If I were buying a 4 cylinder turbo car, I'd try to find something smaller. That would also get you better fuel economy if that's important to you. Something like a Z4 could be an option. I think those come with a smaller engine and a convertible model.
It’s been my experience that top up or down makes no difference to the fuel economy. I drive the same for each and have never noticed a difference. The best I ever achieved, which happened to be top down, was equivalent to 35 mpUSg, on a mix of 2 lane running around 55 mph and then on freeway at 70+ mph, this over about 170 miles.

If the OP is buying for cruising distance, there is nothing wrong with an Ecoboost. It has plenty of grunt for the type of driving that I expect he is going to be doing, similar to what I have been doing and will be expanding now that I have retired. I have only ever put 91 in my car but there are many who have used 87 without issue.

No vert here but if you were in my neck of the woods I would let you take a test drive in my 401A GT.

Around here the gas stations only have 87, 89, and 93 octane. 93 octane costs about 33% more than 87 octane.
Gotta pay to play right? Mileage was never a consideration on my part when I began searching for my ride. Going to do over a thousand miles out and back to Carlisle and I only use 93 with stabil every other fillup depending on how low the fuel is in the tank. 87 would save me what, $75-85?

I’m an old geezer and I wouldn’t settle for anything less than the 5.0

i make the 280 mi round trip to Myrtle Beach every month. I usually set the cruise right at 80 as soon as I get on the interstate and average 24 mpg and that’s with the 3:55 rear end.

Getting ready to purchase my cross country sight seeing convertible used Mustang. Question 1 : does a GT really require 90+ octane? and realistically what highway mileage would one get at 80 mph? Questin 2: Since I can't locate GT with the options I want ( 401, active exhaust, safety stuff) would I regret settling for an Ecoboost?
Thanks!
The eb has 310 hp and 350 ft lb of torque most of it at 2900 rpm and up.
If you think you need the 460 hp v8 in a drop top. only you know the answer to that.
But the e/b has more hp than most of the mustang line from 1964-2012. and more torque than all but the top dog fox body's.
The exhaust sound is not a v8 rumble, so if you need that, the e/b won't fill that need.
Go drive a e/b stang local to you. You might find it has all the power you'll ever need.

I agree nobody "needs" the GT power. To me it sounds like the OP WANTS the GT power, though.

I think the Coyote is an engine with a great character. I really like how it makes more and more power as it revs out to redline. The EB is fine, but it has the turbo small engine issues like lag. It also hits at lower RPM and then runs out of steam early. So, if a person prefers the naturally aspirated feel they will get more than just power benefits from owning a GT.

Regarding the octane conversations from earlier, I don't know how the 2018+ cars react to 87 octane, but I've never noticed any change in power or performance running 87 99% of the time in my 2015 or 2017 GTs. I live in a northern state with a cool climate, though. There are very few days when I'm sitting in stop and go traffic in 95 degree heat.

There are lots of folks on here who can't comprehend that there are some who have no interest in the V8. They think that it'll always be in the back of the EB owner's mind that they shoulda bought a 5.0, or wish they coulda. Well, some of us coulda, but didn't wanna... I get the stories of regret. If it means something to you, buy the GT. If it doesn't, screw the naysayers and enjoy the heck out of your MUSTANG, no matter what's under the hood!!! 💪🏼😁

No offense intended to the OP but to me asking "what should I buy?" is rather pointless as we all have different likes and dislikes and really only we can decide what is right for us. I knew what I wanted and bought it as I'm sure most on here did too. I would never presume to tell someone what they should get.

I resemble your title.
I bought a new 2022 gt 301a 6mt a couple months ago.

If I set the cruise control 50-55, reset mpg, kinda flat road, I get low 30 mpg.
Overall mpg just driving around mid to upper 20's mpg.
Which is higher mpg than I would of guessed.

2022 manual says use 87 octane.
I get no pinging. I think the gen3 coyote is 12 to 1 compression.

I have read the 2022 coyote motor is emision detuned and I believe it.
Acceleration from a stop is great, but if you floor it from 30,40,50,60 barely any getup and go.

My 2019 f150 5.0l has more mid speed acceleration than my new mustang !

That’s not the 10HP drop from 21’ to 22’. There’s no butt dyno in the world that can feel that. It’s the new M6 ratios in the 18+ that is causing what you feel.

I’m 71 years old and just bought Gt Convertible in Rapid Red . Absolutely love it…My Grandpa once told me when I was in high school and buying my first car and was worrying about gas prices..etc… ,He said.” Bill, if you are worried about affording to put gas in your car…then you can’t afford a car.” LOL
Get the V8.

That's your 6spd. It's a damn shame its so neutered compared to the auto. I put up with the 6spd for a year, but it was just too damn anemic. Finally bit the bullet and moved on to the auto. It's like a completely different car. Pulls insanely hard at all speeds!

I have 2023 F150 with the Gen 4 Coyote in it. It is strong for a truck but no where near my 2019 A10 GT. I'm sure its the GT manual's tall gearing like others have noted that is the culprit. My Mustang pulls hard no matter what speed I'm at.

It's not about the miles per gallon, it's about the Smiles per gallon...

Remember like 40-60 years ago (and even less) we had Vacuum operated wipers, carbs, chokes, floor switches, and everyone had a great time...

Just buy the one you love, and enjoy it!
