HI There,

I recently purchased a used 2017 GT 350 with 12,000 miles. Right now it is being detailed and will not be driven for another month at least, we just got 6 inches of snow last night.

My question is what type of engine oil do you guys recommend for the GT 350. I know I can call my local ford dealership, but I would rather hear from actual owners. And can it be bought locally or do you have to order it ?

Next is I noticed that when the tank is full you only have a fuel range of 250-300 miles with the fuel tank filled. So when you guys take trips where you are driving say 2-4 hours one way, are taking oil with you ? I'm assuming most owners are since you need to check the oil level every 2 gas fill ups. To me this is kind of a pain in the ass, especially if you plan on doing some spirited driving.

Just curious what real GT 350 owners are doing about oil and having oil on hand with you during trips ?

I am not that mechanically inclined, but my other question is why does this engine drink so much engine oil so frequently ? This may sound naive, but a NASCAR ENGINE will run just fine for 3 hours without adding oil ? No ?

Thank You.

Hello Frank,
Welcome...
I buy my Motorcraft 5W50 Full Synthetic oil, and Motorcraft filters here:
http://k-mansparts.com/
Cheaper than dealers... They offer a kit -> Oil + Filter, (shipping cost me 11.00)
Not all GT350 engines use oil, just some of them.
I have Never added any additional oil to mine, (17,000 mi +)
I change every 3-4k.
UPDATE: Now have 18,500 and finally added 1 qt.

NASCAR engines are very different,
For one thing they don't use Flat Plane Crankshafts, and also they use a Dry-Sump oil system which has a tank in the rear of the car behind the driver which holds about 20 gts.

Thank you very much. Good to hear that yours does not use oil ! So you do not take oil with you on long road trips ?

Check rockauto.com for oil/filter deals. It's pretty cheap, compared to any other place (That I looked at). Motorcraft Full synthetic is what I used on my 350R as well as my new raptor. Good luck.

Assuming you just bought your car and haven’t had much of a chance to drive it, why are you assuming you’re going to use a lot of oil?

2017 GT350 now gone to a great home.

Exactly. I carry oil with me on extended trips in every car/van I own, including this GT350. I took an 800 mile trip in the fall through the Kettle Moraine rolling hills and definitely didn't keep to the speed limits. I used no oil.

My 2017 GT350 has never used any oil at all. I haven't taken it on anything longer than day trips, but even if I had, I wouldn't have worried about it. In fact, nothing about this car has ever caused me to worry. I intend to drive it until I die. Which, uh, is hopefully a long ways off. Come to think of it, I rather hope I outlive my car...

But anyway, I personally only put Motorcraft synthetic in mine at oil changes. No other oil ever, period. I follow the manual religiously, or as religiously as I can.

HI There,

The only reason why I am preparing myself for using a lot of oil is because the ford dealership that I bought the GT 350 from said that I need to check the oil level every other fuel fill up and it seems to be a somewhat common issue with GT 350's. I do not want to lose a engine even though I have a Ford CPO warranty and a silver plan extended warranty.

Its simple. Check your oil every time you fill your tank. Oil consumption will vary based upon how you drive your car (highway miles vs spirited driving). Get to know your car and how it uses oil under the various circumstances.

Yes, some engines have been found to use extreme amounts. However, that is not the norm. It has been discussed here and most agree that the reason an engine uses excessive oil is related to a valve issue (valve seal or other defect). Big deal.

Rock auto is a good place to buy oil, I stick with motorcraft. You can find 5% discount codes online as well, buy a case of 12 and it gives you an extra 2 quarts between changes (if needed).

It's not a bad idea to carry oil with you regardless. I have always had an extra quart in this car just in case, my car uses about .5qt per 1500 miles it seems. That's not a big deal to me at all.

Over 700 miles on my new motor (and yes I know oil consumption doesn't usually become obvious for a few 1000 miles) but it is weird to see the oil level not change at all since the swap. The previous motor I would've been down 3+ qts by now!

Is your GT 350 a 2017, 2018, or 2019. The only reason why I ask is because you said it's " new".

I’m at 1000 finally on new motor and using no oil. However I would suggest always carrying 1 or 2 quarts with you on long trips. The gas stations along the interstate and small towns won’t have the required weight oil on the shelf.
